Hump Day!!!

Had a very nice visit with my mom and aunt, dinner Monday night came out great. I set up tv trays and we ate outside and enjoyed the nice weather. Yesterday was a draggy day, had a heck of a time waking up, don't know why, same this morning and both nights I pretty much slept thru. My day lillies are blooming, I really am going to get those pics posted. Just gotta get the time to do it. Hubby has the 'puters set up so the pics are stored on his machine, I can access them and then run them thru photoshop and then I can store them in files back on his machine and then I can pull them to be posted or put them in a gallery on my homepage (considering the number of pics I've got, that is probably what I'll do). Set up stakes and line for the snap peas to climb, tho I ran out of line. So I'll pick up some packing twine this Friday and finish getting the climbing set up done. I'm going to see if I can scare up some trellis to put on the back of the shed so I can pla

10 Commandments of Self-Love

Here is something that came thru on a mailing list I am on. Posted with permission: 10 Commandments of Self-Love (c) by Pat Ballard 1. Thou shalt never stand in front of a mirror and think negative thoughts about thyself. 2. Thou shalt never stand anywhere and think negative thoughts about thyself. 3. Thou shalt search diligently for thy good points and whenst thou hast found them, even though it may only be one, thou shalt hold on to the good points and nourish them and build upon them and cause them to grow mightily. 4. Thou shalt close thy mind to any negative words, thoughts or actions that thine enemy might hurl thy way, and shalt never let them enter thy mind in any form or fashion. Neither shalt thou allow any soul to say negative things to thee or about thee. 5. Thou shalt always conduct thyself in an honorable fashion and not allow thy mouth to appear larger than thy body. 6. Thou shalt always do thy best to look like thou carest about thyself, as no one r

Now I am REALLY sleepy

Had lunch with my mom, she treated to Taco Del Mar (the thought of a fish taco however sounds so very, very wrong). Opted for one of their taco salads. Quite good, had the pork in mole sauce and opted for the black beans instead of refrieds. Probably won't go there very often, I have a special place in my heart for Toxic Slime, er, Taco Time, which beats the heck out of Taco Hell hands down everytime :D Weather is fairly nice today. Partly cloudy, but a lot cooler, 79F at the moment, I doubt we'll have any rain. There is a forecast for scattered thunder storms, but I don't expect any today :( We haven't had a good thunderstorm in a long while.

I desperately need more coffee

I really, really didn't want to wake up this morning. I could have gleefully shot the alarm clock and gone back to sleep, except hubby would have probably objected to being awoken to gun shots :D Yesterday was a lovely day. Mom, Aunt P and I drove up to Coeur d'Alene and had a good time. We stopped at the Coeur d'Alene Casino outside of Worley for a quick peek and rest stop. There is something totally, totally wrong about a blackjack table where the dealer is a video screen and there wasn't a single one-armed bandit in the entire place :( I guess I'm just an old fashioned girl, I prefer real people dealing my cards and I hate feeding dollar bills and pushing buttons. I love the sound of coins dropping into the slot, the feel of pulling a lever and listening to the wheels turn and the sound they make as they stop. Oh well, I guess my money is safe :D We didn't get to drive around downtown CDA much, we did hit the Ironman competition, they were doing the bike p

Weekend

Just talked to my mom on the phone, she and my aunt have arrived in town. She'll stop by the library for a few minutes a little later to say hi. They will come out to the house later this evening after their function tonight. I was beginning to think they weren't coming as I thought they were arriving yesterday and since I hadn't heard a thing, thought they'd decided not to come (mom had mentioned in a previous email that since she could open the attachment with the details on the anniversary function, that might be a possibility). She and my aunt have stuff to do tomorrow night, so hubby and I will be free to go to Solstice Circle in the evening. Sunday we'll drive up to Coeur d'Alene for the day. The Ironman competition is also happening up there this weekend, we may get a chance to see part of it.

Deep Fried Live

For folk of the culinery bent (or anyone who just loves a good giggle) and who like to watch cooking shows, I recommend Deep Fried Live starring Tako the Octopus. The fun and trouble he gets into trying to produce a culinery delite is sidesplitting and the site is a wealth of cooking tips and assorted facts and tidbits.

Onion recipes

The sauteed sweet onions were delish last night (and I am a happy camper in that I have leftovers for lunch today :D ). I prefer to use sweet onions as I have problems with regular onions (they hate me and I dislike having a sore tummy :( ). Walla Walla Sweets are my fav, it has nothing to do with the fact they are a regional produce :D hehehehehe. So to make cheesy sauteed sweets, heat a heavy frying or sautee pan over medium high and then add a bit of olive oil. Skin and slice onions into rings and layer into the pan. Sprinkle with a bit of kosher salt and put lid on pan. Allow to cook for a few moments, then remove lid and toss onions to coat with oil and the juices which should be starting to form. Replace lid and allow to cook some more, continue this until the onions start to turn golden brown. Remove lid and continue to turn the onions so they carmelize evenly. When they reach desired doneness (I like them to be a medium darkness), remove from heat and sprinkle with cheese of

OOOOOOOOO blessed, cool rain!

Frivil, I hate that when it happens. Had a nice little post and then it disappears when I hit "post entry" Okay, suffice to say, it's cooling down, we'v a bit of rain and hopefully we'll have some more. Temp outside is now 74F and temp in the house is 84F. It is cooling off enough to look at fried chicken and sauteed walla walla sweets with a bit of cheese sprinkled on top. Probably do frozen brocoli for the veg. Did some more weeding in the garden. If I WANTED morning glory (AKA bind weed, an annoying weed) I'd have a bumper crop. My swet onions are making showing now. Definately need to see about turning my compost pile. I want to move it off for a while and se if by chance I hav ANY worms suitable for my worm bin. If not, I can at lest turn it so it can rot properly.

Too darned hot!!!

Since developing the Graves' disease, I haven't been dealing with heat really well (then again, I also don't deal with cold well either) and living in a tin box isn't helping any. It is times like this I am GLAD I work full time in a building with air conditioning. At one point we looked at our indoor/outdoor thermometer and they both read 88 degrees F, then the temp outside started falling, but the temp inside didn't :( Hubby definately isn't doing well with the heat, he never has (then again, he was born way north of here so that isn't too surprising). I really do want to save up and get central air installed. We have a swampcooler, but it will cost more money then it is worth to repair the darn thing and besides, it is mounted in the roof over the hallway where we keep our paperback books and a LOT of not cheap science fiction and fantasy artwork I have collected over the years. Last thing I want is to up the humidity in the house. Since it was so darne

a minor change

besides the obvious title change and the fact I am playing around with the header. I've turned off the link for the friends list on the main page, it is gettting LOOONNNNNGGGG :D hehehehe. Don't want folk spraining limbs scrolling down to see all the wonderful folk I know from the Bravenet Journal Community :) Hopefully the great folk from Bravenet will take up the suggestion someone made on the forum to have an inline window for the friends list, like the inline window currently used for posts on the layout I am currently using. Friends links can be found on my biopage (me, myself and I) and also under "Friends" in the other blogs links box. Friends takes you to my Kinja digest for all my friends (for folks who are new to my journal, the digest updates regularly when folk post new stuff to their journals).

Okay

Going to test drive JeanC's Cat House and Shooting Society as the name of my journal for a while to see how that feels, or until something else strikes my fancy :D

I'm comptemplating...

changing the name of my journal from JeanC's Web Journal to something else. I'm happy with the layout and the colors, just feeling the need to do something else with it and that is the only thing left (besides the ever changing quote I put in the header). Just not sure to what..... JeanC's Musings JeanC's Ramblings JeanC's Cat House and Shooting Society :D Hmmmmmmm, definately going to take a lot of thought

Words to live by

WORDS TO LIVE BY Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue. Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it. Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be recalled by their maker. Eat a live toad in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you for the rest of the day. If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it. It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others. Never buy a car you can't push. Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you don't have a leg to stand on. Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance. The early worm gets eaten by the bird, so sleep late. When everything's coming your way, you're in the wro

Planning ahead

My garden isn't anywhere close to having veggies, but I am already planning for next years garden. I didn't really think about how I was laying out my plants this year and have discovered I could have done better. But I am expecting it to produce some pretty yummy veggies. The eggplants look like they are going to make it, even the ones I thought were going to bite the big one, so fingers crossed they will start growing and producing (I am looking forward to serious eggplant dishes this summer :D ). The tomatos are hanging in there and the cucumbers are definately making their presence known, esp the one that is growing where I didn't plant any seeds. I figure it got help moving from a kitty who was digging where she shouldn't. Speaking of kitties, Nicky discovered that if she digs in mommy's garden when mommy is out watering, Nicky gets soaked down with the hose. We had one very surprised kitten LOL So my plan for the garden next year is to plant cold weather ve

Hmmmmmmmmm.....

Good question on the radio, would I clone my pet? At first thought I'd say yes, but then if I think about it, the answer would be no. Sure, I'd have a pet with the same genes as the original, but it wouldn't BE the pet I had. The curcumstances of their birth and early life would be totally different and the pet would not have the same traits as the original. Take my sweet Freddy cat (who I still desperately miss). He was born in a wood pile out at a friends farm and spent his first couple of months running semi-wild, being raised by mom cat, dad cat, uncle cat, the family dog and any human who managed to catch him to help socialize him. Sure, I could have his cells used to clone him, but unless I can duplicate the circumstances of his life before I brought him home, he's just going to be a kitty with Freddy's genes AND there is no guarantee that he'd even look like the original. The kitty they successfully cloned this last year looked nothing like the origina

New week

Yesterday was nice, I wish the weekend was a lot longer. Not looking forward to working 5 days in a row, I like my 3 day weekends :D Yesterday we slept in, got up and did coffee and got ready to head over for Solstice Circle and BBQ :D We are doing a public invited circle next weekend, so yesterday was for the coven. One of the member's mom died a couple weeks ago, so we did a small healing for her. Our Crone and her hubby had already decided on next weeks rite, she said she wasn't going to apologize and we all looked at her and said "Why? Now we don't have to spend time figuring out what we want to do LOL". So then we sat around the circle and watched the golden eagles flying overhead and enjoyed the sunshine and company :) All in all, a nice relaxing Sunday. Weather was great and it is going to be nice this week. Time to break out all the summer clothes. I need to go thru and figure out which shorts are work approriate and then match them with tank tops.

Live Like You Were Dying :: Tim McGraw

This song has been on heavy rotation on the stations I listen to. It brings to mind a quote I like by Joan Baez: "You don't get to choose how you're going to die or when. You can only decide how you're going to live, NOW." Live Like You Were Dying :: Tim McGraw He said I was in my early forties with a lot of life before me when a moment came that stopped me on a dime and I spent most of the next days looking at the x-rays Talking bout the options and talking bout sweet time I asked him when it sank in that this might really be the real end how?s it hit you when you get that kinda news man what?d you do and he said I went sky diving I went Rocky Mountain climbing I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named BluManchu and I loved deeper and I spoke sweeter and I gave forgiveness I?d been denying and he said someday I hope you get the chance to live like you were dying. He said I was finally the husband

Yesterday

So yesterday I slept in a bit (even tho the alarm went off), got up, did coffee, tossed some laundry in the machine (I am SO gld to have gotten that cold water tap fixed), got dressed, went out to commit thistlecide again, did the previous nights dishes and puttered about the living room. It has been so nice to be able to open up the house and enjoy the nice wether and sunshine, overnight temps are getting into the 50's, so it will soon be time to open up the back door and open the window in it so the kitties can have 24/7 indoor/outdoor access. I mentioned our newest guilty pleasure, Celebritry Poker Showdown on Bravo. We'd watched an episode a couple weeks back and got instantly hooked on it. I dislike most reality shows that the networks run, but I like shows like Trading Spaces, Monster House, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy nd such, along with all my cooking shows. We caught the first episode of Big this week, I think that is going to be a good show to watch. They buil

Short post

Now that hubby's 'puter is back up and running, I was going to post todays happenings, but we've weather rolling in and we've been hearing thunder on the horizon, so it is time to shut things down and cuddle up on the couch and watch this weeks Celebrity Poker Showdown (a new guilty pleasure :D ). Will try and get a more detailed post up tomorrow :) Okay, just noticed the new layout of the journal entry options, kewl.

Ever have one of those days....

where you plan on saying a lot of things and the minute you open the editor, your brain derails? I've been having one of those weeks LOL :D Thanks the Goddess I've a 3 day weekend, I really need to get some rest. Last weekend was a busy one with the re-arranging of the office and all and I really didn't get much rest. I think with a 3 day weekend I can get what I need done in a couple of days and then get a whole day of not doing much. Plans for the weekend include mowing the lawn, starting the decluttering of the bedroom, spraying more of the water stains on the ceiling in the various rooms, spending some time at a friends for a pre-Solstice BBQ (gotta rsvp that one of these days hehehehe), and get ready for my mom and my aunt visiting next weekend. Luckily with FlyLady I am not panicking like I used to, the house is more or less in decent shape and I don't have to hide the dirty dishes in the oven :D Definately have got to work on the pics I've taken the l

It seems to me....

that I haven't posted a recipe in a while. I've been doing lots of chicken of late and I have a couple of favorite recipes I like to do. One of them is Chicken Paprika: Take one whole chicken, cut up and sprinkle with some kosher salt. In a heavy pot (I prefer my cast iron dutch oven), heat some olive oil or vegetable oil on medium high and when hot, add chicken, skinside down. Cook until chicken is browned and then turn and brown the other side. Remove chicken to a plate and pour off most of the grease, leaving some. Lower heat to medoum and add 1 small or 1/2 medium diced onion and 2-3 cloved diced garlic and sautee until onions are clear. Becareful not to burn the garlic. When onions are clear, add 2-3 tablespoons paprika (I prefer sweet hungarian) and stir into onions and garlic. Increase heat to medium high and add back the chicken with any juices that have accumulated on the plate. Add 1 can chicken broth or 1 cup water and bring to boil for a couple of minutes, then l

Survey finds over 60% of clinically obese women began dieting before 14

Survey finds over 60% of clinically obese women began dieting before 14 Thursday, 10-Jun-2004, by News-Medical A University of California, Berkeley-led survey of women defined as clinically obese shows that nearly two-thirds of them went on their first diet before age 14 and, as adults, were more likely to be heavier than women who started dieting after age 14. The survey, published in this month's issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, also found that those who started dieting before age 14 were more than twice as likely to have dieted more than 20 times when compared with women who began dieting later in life. Respondents said they tried a range of dieting techniques, from hypnotism to low-calorie diets to commercial weight loss programs, in their lifelong attempts to lose weight. Some women surveyed were even prescribed amphetamines, a common treatment for weight loss in the 1960s and early '70s. "These findings should counter the popular myth

Bleh!

The weather is getting nicer, it is partly sunny today, a bit of a breeze and it is currently 57 degrees, which is a lot warmer now then this time yesterday and I am feeling bleh. Not sure why, I probably should get my butt in gear and go back on my supplements and my multivit. Doing pretty well on my allergy meds, haven't had any problems since I started, which is nice. I hate allergies, I never had them as a kid (except for being allergic to doctors and needles LOL) and I resent getting them late in life. Did get my garden watered yesterday, pulled up a whole lotta maple seedlings that were sprouting in my garden and lawn. Then went in and fell down on the couch. Whipped up some chicken and fettucine noodles for dinner. I do love the Johnny's Caesar Garlic seasoning, used that on the chicken with a bit of olive oil and lemon juice and baked it and then served it with fettucine noodles tossed with olive oil. Yummy (I am looking forward to lunch, I brought the leftovers :D

Pretty decent weekend

Spent most of it re-arranging the office and getting the video shelving out of the bedroom. Moved the shelves into the office and it is amazing how much easier it goes with the right tools. When we first moved into the trailer, I only had a Black & Decker cordless screw driver to put up the shelving. It was an all day process and I was not a happy camper by the time I got it done. This time around we had the cordless Cummins drill we bought last week and it went up in a matter of minutes (okay, we did get one of the bracket rails upside down, but that didn't take much to fix). The longest part of the whole process was taking the videos off the shelves and then getting them back on in order. We've well over 500 tapes and we discovered we have a run of 15 that had the same numbers on them as others. Figure we accidently re-loaded an old version of the database one time when the computer puked and since by that point we didn't have enough shelves to put them on, we didn&

D'OH!!!!

As I was popping in and out of friends journals, I was kicking myself when I realized it had been a while since I'd gotten off my butt and went visiting. Berating myself about not keeping up with how folk were doing I suddenly had one of those moments and went D'OH!!!!! I already use Kinja for the fat acceptance blogs I keep up with, it wouldn't be that hard to set up another account and put all my friends blogs on one so I can check as often as I want to to see who has updated recently. So I just got done setting up my new Kinja digest and I put the link Jean's Friends under "Other Blogs", which means I had to drop a link since I am now maxed out :D I've also added the new Bravenet Calander under "Things to do" :)

End of a long week

My moods are definately affected by the weather, I've been feeling rather BLECH most of the days. Heard the sad news about Ray Charles yesterday, he was one of the greatest voices of the century whose music crossed musical genre lines. This weekend I'll be putting our copy of the Blues Brothers into the VCR just to watch Ray as the music store owner. We were going to do that last night, but hubby surprised me with tickets to see Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban at our local theater. Little sneak hehehehehe He totally had me fooled, he said we needed to stop at our ISP to pay our bill and then he just walked right into the theatre. The movie was great, the best one yet, even hubby really liked it. He enjoyed the previous two movies, but liked this one the best. I did have to fill him in on some background info and such, hes never read the books. Not quite his flavor in reading. I did forget about the spider scene tho, I crawled under the seat until it was safe, and I

YEEEHAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The jury came back with not guilty on the terrorism charges and some of the visa fraud charges in the trial of Sami Al-Hussayen and a mistrial was declared on the rest of the charges. Sami is a student here at the U who the US government railroaded this last year on trumped up charges and arrested him in a pre-dawn raid over a year ago and made life miserable for his wife and children. He is still subject to deportation and the gov't may try and retry him on the other charges, but hopefully the government suffered a big enough black eye they will decide to avoid further embarrassment and just quietly put him on a plane so he can go home to his wife and children. With any luck, he can finish his degree with the U via long distance education or transfer everything to a university overseas where he won't have to worry about being harrassed by the thugs at Fatherlan... er Homeland Security. All the time he was unjustly jailed and confined to solitary confinement, in a prison

Obesity craze's dangerous message: Size, not health, counts

Obesity craze's dangerous message: Size, not health, counts By Patricia Pearson Arkansas has tipped the scales on the childhood-obesity crisis * literally. Last week, officials there announced that they had weighed 276,000 schoolchildren during the past year and discovered that 40% were overweight or obese. Notes have been sent home to parents. Diets, presumably, advised. Laudatory as this effort sounds, the focus on poundage sends chills up my spine. Are we quite certain that a focus on weight, rather than on health, is the one we wish to convey to our children? I ask because my 7-year-old daughter and I came across the final episode of Fox's plastic-surgery makeover show, The Swan, a few weeks back, and it was a striking reminder that this society remains one in which the cruel adage still holds: You can never be too rich or too thin. Even as we wring our hands about the obesity epidemic, we look to television and see ordinary American women submitting to a mo

Ronald Reagan

So former President Reagan passed away this last weekend. The news has been full of praise and adulation of him, continuing the attempt to proclaim him saint. Sigh! People have seemed to have forgotten all the things he did that weren't nice, such as firing the air controllers who only wanted a raise in pay, gutting a lot of civil rights programs, gutting programs to help the environment, etc. He wasn't the reason the Berlin Wall came down and Communism fell, he just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Bill Mitchell has a very good political cartoon on CNN that states what is happening quite well. All that said, no one, but no one deserves to develop Alzheimer's and fade away like that. For that I truely feel sympathy for President Reagan and his family and wish to send them comfort in their time of grief. --------- Okay, exceptions to someone developing the disease would be Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin, Sadam Hussein, Osama bin Laden and a whole slew o

He Says the Fat Epidemic Is an Illusion

He Says the Fat Epidemic Is an Illusion New York Times Ask anyone: Americans are getting fatter and fatter. Advertising campaigns say they are. So do federal officials and the scientists they rely on. But Dr. Jeffrey Friedman, an obesity researcher at Rockefeller University, argues that contrary to popular opinion, national data do not show Americans growing uniformly fatter. Instead, he says, the statistics demonstrate clearly that while the very fat are getting fatter, thinner people have remained pretty much the same. Let it be said that Dr. Friedman, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and the discoverer of the gene for leptin, a hormone released by fat cells, is not fat. He is tall and gangly, with the rumpled look of an academic scientist. As an obesity researcher, he might be expected to endorse the prevailing view that obesity in this country is out of control. But Dr. Friedman said he was outraged by the acceptance of what he sees as a hurtful myth, one that e

Monday

Blah. I hated turning on the alarm last night, 6am is just way to early to even think of being awake. Manage to stumble thru making a pot of coffee, we'd only had enough for a cup and a half in the pot and that wasn't nearly enough to start the day. Managed to get out last night to do some planting. The day turned out to be pretty nice, the thunderstorms and rain all day didn't materialize. So I got the romas tansplanted, some of the cherry tomatos in and 6 hills of cucumbers, a row of long beams and a couple rows of sugar peas. Onions are going around the front edge, next to the edging. My neighbor came over and gave me some giant marigold seeds, so I'll plant those along the edges of the garden where I can to help keep bugs out. She asked about the hills, when I told her they were for cucumbers she said there wasn't room. I told her I was planning on running stakes and sting and run them upwards and she nodded and said "that will work". I've not

Lzay day today, I think

Had a most enjoyable dinner with The Dog last night. He and his family had moved down to southern Idaho for work and he was back up to finish getting the rest of their stuff. He is a character and a half and boy do we miss having him to hang around with. I am quite sure we were thoroughly entertaining to the other diners at the restaruant (and possibly a bit alarming, we can get into some pretty interesting firearms discussions :D hehehehehe). The kitten REALLY loves her laser pointer, we had her running all the way in to the kitchen after that point of light. I think I finally have her tuckered out this morning! Weather out side is kinda icky, not sure if I am going to get those seedlings out and the seeds in the ground today. I knew I should have done it Friday night. Maybe later today. We still have a bit of grocery shopping to do today and look for shoes for hubby. I do need to turn the water to te house off at some point so I can fix the cold water tap for the washer, it ha

Good weekend so far

Decided we needed to get out of town, so drove down to Lewiston to do some shopping. Hit Costco in Clarkston and wandered thru to decide if we wanted to get a membership again. Prices and such we good, so we did. Wandered back to Lewiston to hit Shopko and found some jeans and shirts for hubby. Hit Home Depot and wandered around a bit. Popped across to Fashion Bug and I picked up a pair of pants on sale and they had undies for buy 3 get 3 free, so I did. Found a laser pointer at Petco, so the kitten has a new toy (KiKi likes it too). Then it was back to Costco to shop (we didnt' want to wander around with meat and such in the car) and picked up a new digital camera while there, a Nikon 2100. Takes nice pics. I'll have to run some thru photoshop, I got some really nice ones of my irises. Well, just got a call from a friend, have to blast out and meet him for dinner in 10 mintues and I gotta change :D

Accompished so far today

I commited thistlecide, didn't find as many thistles as I thought I was going to, which is good. Means I'm keeping up with the little buggers. Transplanted most of my bell peppers, I've split them between 2 of the garden spaces. I've still a couple starter pots of peppers, I'll put some of them into containers to put on the porch and steps and around the yard. I transplanted the big boy tomatos that managed to survive. I still have seeds, so will plant some of those into pots and do the same with those as the peppers. My eggplants seem to really love where they are at. I'll put out some of the romas this evening, along with some of the cherry tomatos. I'll put some of those in pots also. I may not have much space to put in a regular garden, but I can get really creative if I have to :) Still have to sit down with my garden books and figure out what else to put in. Still to do today, SHOPPING!!!!! :D

Ah, the weekend!

Watered my eggplants, they were looking pretty good. Got the old lawnmower going and mowed the lawn. Makes me REALLY appreciate the self-propelled mower even more. I really need to get that one fixed. Made some iced tea and sat on the steps and watched the robins hop around the lawn within 10 feet of KiKi, who ignored them. Nicky just watched them from the safety from the steps. I'm doing pork stirfry tonight, the rice is cooking as we speak and the pork is finishing defrosting in the microwave. I almost started a fire in the kitchen tho. I put the rice on to cook and switched on the wrong burner. Torched the burner cover on the front burner. Now I have to get a replacement set. Tomrrow morning I will pop outside as soon as I have my coffee and commence with Operation Thistle Annihilation. Rather then let the property owner sneak in with his poisons and nuke my lawn, I will go after the thistles organically, with white vinegar. I have it in a spray bottle and I get up close t

Out of the mouth of babes: The middle wife

This is for anyone who is having a Monday today (tho I am not, today is actually going well and I am looking forward to a 3 day weekend) or anyone who needs a good giggle. This is a sweet, hilarious story: The Middle Wife By an Anonymous 2nd Grade Teacher: I've been teaching now for about fifteen years. I have two kids myself. But the best birth story I know is the one I saw in my own second-grade classroom a few years back. When I was a kid, I loved show-and-tell, so I always have a few sessions with my students. It helps them get over shyness and usually, show-and-tell is pretty tame. Kids bring in pet turtles, model airplanes, pictures of fish catches and stuff like that. And I never, ever place any boundaries or limitations on them. If they want to lug it to school and talk about it, they're welcome. Well, one day this little girl, Erica, a very bright, very outgoing kid, takes her turn and waddles up to the front of the class with a pillow stuffed under her sweater

One thing I really like about working at a library...

is I get to see a lot of great books that come thru either new or as returns. I just got an autobiography of Eleanor Roosevelt, who is a personal hero of mine (in fact I call my Rugar Vaquero SA .38/.357 Eleanor). I also am processing some new cookbooks going out to folk who put holds on them. So anyone who is interested in vegetarian cooking may want to look out for a couple of these titles. The recipes look yummy and easy to do. One is Fresh Fresh from the vegetarian slow cooker. I've been perusing this book (I'm third on the list :( ) and there are lots of great looking recipes. As I really want to do more crockpot cooking I think this will be a great book to read. Another book is The vegetarian 5-ingredient gourmet . I love meals that are simple, but have lots of flavor and the recipes in this book look like they will do the trick :) So, now to anxiously await my turn to get my hands on them.

I hate mosquitos

Crap, post disappeared when I hit post. Okay, try this again. Got out in the garden and did some weeding and transplanted my eggplant seedlings. Once in the ground I feed them some watered down compost tea and have my fingers crossed they survive. I'll do some more weeding tomorrow and maybe mow a bit of lawn. My daisies are doing wonderful, the ones I had to tie up are getting straighter. The columbines are blooming and I've some irises getting ready to pop too. We've a pond across the road and the mosquitos are going nuts breeding. They are getting quite huge and I expect them to get large enough to carry off a cat or two. I'm going to give one of those wristband bug repellants a try tomorrow when I work in the garden.

Kittens, gotta love them

Nicky is a bundle of energy, esp in the wee hours of the morning. But she is so darned cute, we can't get mad at her. Yesterday after work we brought her over to the next door neighbors so she could play with her brother. She's been gone from their house for a couple of weeks, so seeing them get re-aquainted was a howl. Mom cat kept hissing at her and running away ("I thought you LEFT!!!" hehehehe Don't worry mom, she's not moving back home) and Tuffy wasn't too sure about this critter who looked vaguely familier. After some hissing and fur fluffing, they got down to some serious wrassling and stalking each other. Nicky just had the time of her life, esp since our kitties aren't up for or won't play with her (tho Mister does a little bit, but he's not up for the challenge of serious wrassling with a kitten). She was seriously tuckered out when we borught her home (tho after a quick 10 minute nap she was re-charged and ready to go LOL) Speaki

Size-wise action

"If you are a woman who is comfortable with her size, please remember this: when you are in the company of women, what you do and how you express yourself supports other large women. Give yourself and other women support, whenever, however, you can." From: Erdman, Cheri K. Live large! ideas, affirmations & actions for sane living in a larger body. HarperCollins, 1997

All in all, a nice weekend

We did get the flag pole back up and yesterday morning ran the flags up, the US flag, the "don't tread on me" flag and the POW/MIA flag. We did have wind, but enough to fly the flags out and not run the risk of the pole crashing down. I warmed my heart to see the flags back up. We do need to get some PVC pipe to use as a sleeve, the pole is a flag pole attached to a piece of dowling with a short pipe, so it is a bit iffy. A sleeve would strenghten it quite a bit, esp with the winds we have. Didn't get much work done around the house yesterday, after Sat & Sun we were kinda tuckered. Did get some laundry done, let the kitten out on the porch for a while and did dishes. Watched the rest of the Coupling marathon from Sunday (the real Coupling, not that abomination NBC tried to convince us would be good, even if they did use the same scripts as the original version). We'd recorded it on PVR so we could watch it later and zip the commericals. I had to dig my inh
