OH WAY FREAKING KEWL!!!!!!!

Ancient astronomical device thrills scholars "An ancient astronomical calculator made at the end of the 2nd century BC was amazingly accurate and more complex than any instrument for the next 1,000 years, scientists said on Wednesday."

Beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Image
ornament1 , originally uploaded by JeanC38 . We started decorating the staff lounge today and it is looking bright and sparkly. I'll proabably start decorating for the holidays next week after I get my papers done. We'll see about a tree once the boy scouts get their lot up. Haven't decided if I'm going to decorate around my desk at work, have to think about it. There is plenty of stuff left in the break room I can bring down. Scrapper didn't show up again last night and he is going to get an earful when I see him. He had better have been holed up in the horse barn, even tho it didn't get as cold last night as they were predicting. It was still cold enough. We did have another couple of inches of snow fall this morning. The county has been keeping our road plowed, much to our amazement. The only thing we can think of is that one house is for sale and the realtor has enough pull over the county to keep our road open. Would be nice if the county was this ni

It's Hump Day

and I am completely incapable of thinking of anything clever for a title. On the plus side it hasn't gotten quite as cold as predicted, tho it is still cold. Currently 19F with a high of 32F predicted for tomorrow. WHEW!!!!!!! Wasn't able to get Scrapper inside last night. Hubby said he was on the porch when he left to get me, but wasn't around when we got home. I'm seriously hoping he'd found a warm, cozy hidey hole in the horse barn as it is kept fairly warm for the horse. Everytime I woke up in the night I was worried about that furball. With luck we can get him in tonight. If not, at least it is warming up again tomorrow. We decided we needed pizza for dinner last night, so we hit Papa Murphy's and got a cheese pizza and the Big Murphy stuffed pizza, so leftovers for lunch hehehehehehe Watched Basilisk: The Serpent King which turned out to be a surprisingly deceent flick for all its plot holes. We figured that we'd turn it off and delete it within 10 mi

Snowing again

It's supposed to get pretty cold today and even colder tomorrow, so I finally dug out gloves and a scarf for my head hehehehehehe. Had an early morning visit from a neighbor up the hill, his kitty didn't come home last night and he was asking if we'd seen her. We hadn't, but we'll keep an eye out for her. Most likely she's hold up in either the barn with the horse where it is nice and warm or possibly in the car barn. With luck she'll go home before it gets too cold. We're going to try and bring Scrapper in if we see him, that will definately make life interesting the next couple days haning him in the house, but with temps dipping as low as they are supposed to, I would feel better having to do with some hissing and growling then stay a wake all night worrying he's out freezing to death. Hubby got dinner going last night, he's feeling better so he'll be able to get more things started before he comes to get me at work. Last night he got the

Monday, blech!

I need a good weeks vacation to recoup from this last week LOL. I think I would be fine if I'd gotten a lot more sleep, but I did have a good week. I see there are some people who need a life, this is why I would never live in a neighborhood with a homeowners association. There are too many people who have their pissy little power trips and try and ruin things for other people. I get such a giggle the dictator in this case is trying to claim people think the peace symbol is satanic and they are making people who disagree with him and the board resign from the boards. I think he's just got a hate on for the couple involved and is simply using his position to make their lives miserable. He really needs to get a life. We had more snow this morning, supposed to get some more this afternoon. Temps are going to take a dip starting tomorrow, down to single digits and Spokane is predicting minus temps. BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!! Have to figure out how to keep th

Great article on Fat Studies

November 26, 2006 Big People on Campus By ABBY ELLIN ASK Sheana Director for a detailed description of herself, and chances are the word fat will come up. It is not uttered with shame or ire or any sense of embarrassment; it’s simply one of the things she is, fat. “Why should I be ashamed?” said Ms. Director, 22, a graduate student in women’s studies at San Diego State University, who wields the word with both defiance and pride, the way the gay community uses queer. “I’m fat. So what?” During her sophomore year at Smith College, Ms. Director attended a discussion on fat discrimination: the way the super-sized are marginalized, the way excessive girth is seen as a moral failing rather than the result of complicated factors. But the academic community, she felt, didn’t really give the topic proper consideration. She decided to do something about it. In December 2004, she helped found the organization Size Matters, whose goal was to promote size acceptance and positive body image. In Apr

Snow!

snow3 , originally uploaded by JeanC38 . This was what we saw this morning taking my mom to the airport. Very pretty. Got my mom on the plane okay, still haven't heard from her as to making it home okay. She was probably tired when she got home, so hopefully she'll send an email later tonight. Took a long nap this afternoon, got some dishes done before that. Lunch was leftovers.I need to figure out what to do with them. Definately doing soup. Doing lots of tea with honey. Switched to decaf chai for the evening as we don't need lots of caffeine before bed hehehehehehe. It's helping alot. I'm still coughing, but it isn't too bad today.

I survived Black Friday

Image
It was easy, the only stores I went into were Winco and Safeway LOL. Jeeze, I'm watching the news and that is bloody ridiculus. JUST SAY NO!!!!!!!!!! There is nothing out there in the stores worth going thru that BS for. Survived turkey day with no disasters. YAY!!!!!!!! Everything came out fine, I did forget to pull out the veggies from the freezer, but there was plenty to eat so they weren't missed. On the ick front, I'm getting better, the coughing isn't as bad as it was, tho there are bouts where I almost end up curled up on the floor. We did have to take hubby into the ready care this morning as he's had a sore throat for 3 weeks and it had flared up badly the last couple of days. The good news is it isn't strep, the bad news it is viral and he just has to suffer thru it. So I picked up more lemon juice for tea and honey with lemon as that helps his throat a lot. Did lunch out with my mom afterwards, went to a local Mexican restaruant. had a good lunch, she

Wednesday

Rolling along, got the mashed potatos done yesterday along with 3 loaves of bread. It looks like I'll need to go out and buy some bread, not sure I've got the energy to bake more. I do need to get the dough for the dinner rolls going tho. Broke down yesterday and got some tussin DM cough syrup. Made me loopy as all get out and there is no alcohol in it! But the coughs are getting less painful and more productive, so that is a good thing. Also picked up a bottle of the throat spray so most of that pain is reduced. Mom came out yesterday to visit a while and then I drove her back to the hotel. She came out again for dinner. I fixed potatos au gratin with ham. Still working on that, for some reason I can't always get the potatos to cook thru no matter how long I cook hem. mom mentioned she has the same problems. Hubby thinks it just be the potatos they have now as mom mentioned her mom never had that problem. Oh well, it was yummy even if a little bit crunchy hehehehehehehe. S

I think I sprained my throat!

I've been couging so much the muscles hurt! At least the muscles in my tummy have stopped hurting, but I really don't want to cough anymore. But if I stifle it it is really bad when I do cough. BLECH!!!!!!!!! Been puttering around, got the pumpkin pies done and in the freezer and today I got the sweet potato casseroles done. It was everything I could do to NOT eat both of them right out of the oven LOL, they were darned tasty. I filmed both sessions and hopefully can get them edited down to where I can post them on YouTube. I had planned on having the casseroles done yesterday along with the mashed potatos, but didn't get around to it, so tomorrow is mashed potato and bread day. Cleaned out enough of the fridge to take out the one shelf so I could get the turkey in. A 25.5 lb bird is too big with all the shelves in and there was no room in the freezer. Since we bought the bird on Friday night I had to stash it in the locker out on the deck, so good thing it's been cold

Back among the living

or at least the walking dead. Had to come to work today or go completly insane. I couldn't take anymore of being home sick. At least the killer cough has subsided, now it is the annoying cough. And some sneezing. Luckily my sinuses are staying fairly clear and the squeaky noise I was making while breathing this morning has stopped. I've brought a fair supply of cold remedies, the zinc losenges, Halls defense losenges, plenty of garlic caps, LOTS of aspirin. I've resisted taking the Sudafed thus far and think I can get thru the rest of the week without giving in. Not really into the tacycardia attack the psuedonephrene would give me. Managed to cook dinner last night, even tho it was a package of potato au gratin stuff with some of the ham I baked this weekend. I was able to stand long enough to do it, so things are getting better. So I have leftovers today. Have started planning my turkey day timetable. This weekend I will get the pies prepped and in the freezer. I'll a

A new blog

A friend of mine has a new blog and it is a good one, with lots of good info: Junkfood Science : The truth about food, fat and health. Learn the science that mainstream media doesn't report and how to critically think about the junk they do that's not fit to swallow. Sandy Szwarc knows what she is talking about. She's had a series of great articles on Tech Central Station on the issues of the so called obesity epidemic and food scares. So check out her new blog and her articles.

Now my ribs hurt

BLECH, I really, really hate being sick. Woke up coughing this morning to the point of hacking my lungs out. Ended up in the bathroom with the shower going to make steam so it would hurt less to cough. The coughing has gotten better tonight, but my ribs ache. At least my temp is back towards normal. Called in to work and went back to bed and slept til about noon. Throat is still a bit sore, but it is getting better (hto cocoa and brandy, definatley good for what ails ya hehehehehehe). Trying to figure out Stickam.com. A lot of YouTubers hang out there when they aren't doing videos. I think I almost have it figured out. Now if some of the people I know on YouTube would go online I can see if I am right. Decided to do something different with my candied yams/sweet potatos this year. I'm going to make a swet potato/yam cassarole someone posted on one of my recipe lists. Uses pecans in the topping. So I need to sit down and make a shopping list for this weekend so i can get things

A bit of a wind

Image
broken trees , originally uploaded by JeanC38 . Had a mighty wind blow thru today, officially hit gusts up to 63 mph at the local airpot. Not much damage at our house, these trees belong to some neighbors. Only real damage here was the flagpole and a decorative bottle I had haning in the tree. Went to work this monring and ended up calling hubby to come get me before break. After trying to cough a lung out in th bathroom I decided I needed to go home, even tho I had class tonight. Oh well, I can still turn in the written version of my rpesentation, along witht he previous two. Stopped at the evil empire (Wally World) long enough to get another vaporizer, some soup, garlic caps and echineccia for hubby. Came home, set up the vaporizer, changed into my comfy flannels and curled up on the couch with my mocha spiked with brandy and a nice cowl of cream of chicken soup and crackers. Eventually toddled off to bed where I curled up under the electric blanket for a nice nap. Been curled

Okay....

Green creme de menthe, probably not the best choice for spiking hot cocoa. Interesting green tint to the cocoa tho heehehehehe. Cadbury's hot chocolate mix from Canada, courtesy of friends of ours. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM So plans changed today, hubby's client rescheduled for tomorrow, so we puttered out and about today. Took a lot of video, planning on editing it altogether and come up with some sort of narrative to post on YouTube. Hubby is going to hook a webcam to my computer so I can do vlogs and not have to use the digicam. Have managed to get a bit of house cleaning, tho we currently have a 4'X7' piece of high density particle board sitting in the middle of the living room blocking my view of the telly. Hubby's been death on his office floor, so we have been looking at some flooring solutions until we can finally get around to laying down something permanent (Costco has some really nice put it in yourself bamboo flooring that should last longer then

TGIF!!!!!!!!

Finally Friday and I'm depserately trying to avoid getting sick again. GRRRRRRRRRR. Just popped some asprin for the sore throat, burning chest feeling. Luckily I still have some of my magic chicken soup for lunch. Have to stock up on more coconut milk and look at making another batch. WOO HOOO!!!! Temp is up to a whole 40F now, looking towards a high of 46F and rain. We'll proably have more snow soon (there was a bit yesterday) but with luck it shouldn't stick around for too long. Still have to finish buttoning up the house, was sitting in the bathroom getting dripped on thru the exhaust vent. We'll unplug it and then up goes the plastic and a chunk of reflectix and the bathroom will be instantly warmer (and hopefully drier LOL). Then it is just the one kitchen window and some duct tape arond the inserts in the living room windows. Time to start planning turkey day. I need to get apples to make crockpot apple butter, so may do a little bit of shopping after work tonight

Okay, something a LOT more pleasant

Hubby and I had dinner last night at the Sangria Grill out at the Palouse Mall. It open a year or so ago, but while we've been meaning to try it, we just never got around to it. Thank the Ghodz we finally did. YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They have a very extensive menu, I think if we go in a couple times a month and order something different, we'd never hit the end of the menu hehehehehehehehe. So we started with hot tea and coffee (I was going to have iced tea and changed my mind. The raspberry tea hit the spot) and then ordered the hot spinach dip appetizer: Hubby said he had a nose-gasim when he got a whiff of it, I know I had serious mouth-gasm when I tried it. Hubby ordered the cheesesteak sandwich: While I had the creamy gorgonzola pasta with chicken: OH...MY.....GODDESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That pasta was to die for it was sooooooooo good. Hubby enjoyed his sandwich, tho it wasn't quite to his specs for a cheesesteak sandwich. The

The aftermath

I can't believe Idaho elected Sali for the House. His own party leaders called him an idiot and pulled their support. SIGH! Then again, Idaho also passed a constitutional amendment to treat people who want to marry their partners as 2nd class citizens who have no rights. I got a great idea, while we are at it, lets add that people of different colors can't get married to each other (wait a minute, wasn't that outlawed already and people came to their senses and said people should be able to marry who they want regardless of their skin color?) and even better, since the whole BS comes down to "marriage is for the children" we need to invalidate ALL marriages where there are no kids produced. We'll start with the marriages of the politicians with no kids and work our way down. So folks, I don't care if you don't believe in divorce, you ain't had kids, so therefore your marriage is invalid and we're forcing you thru a divorce whether you like it o

'tis Monday

and one more day of bulls**t political commericals. Thanks the Goddess for Sirius Satellite Radio, it's commercial free and we get it on DishTV. Currently listening to Radio Margaritaville to help banish the icky weather outside. Been tiptoing thru the Vision2020 mail list, local list for Moscow. Getting good explainations on some of the initiatives on the ballot tomorrow and definately finding out who the slime are on the ballot I definately won't be voting for. With luck I'll be hititng the polls first thing in the morning on my way to work to beat the crowds. Staying home sick today, feeling like total crap. Have the humidifier on the end table next to the 'puter pumping out steam and eucalyptus, it's helping. The cold is trying to settle into my chest and I really don't want it there. Woke up coughing and that hurt. Still have to drop my instructor a note that I won't be making it t class, luckily my presentation isn't due until next Monday. The soup

We need to rearrange the week

Weekends should be 5 days and work weeks should be 2 days. Currently trying to avoid coming down with the crud that is running around. I was doing fine yesterday morning, but by mid-afternoon I was feeling very ick. In fact, came home and crawled into bed and slept for a while. Got up and we watched the new Doctor Who . Snice last weeks episode was the start of a two parter, we waited until we got last nights episode. Good thing too, I wouldn't have survived waiting a whole week for part two. Those Cybermen were SCARY!!!!!!!!! Finally felt like eating so for dinner I nuked some leftover chicken with the thai sauce I made mixing pad thai and tom yum sauce and adding coconut milk. It was more sauce then chicken, but exactly what I needed. Lovely creamy goodness wth enough heat to make my taste buds sit up and say MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! So, slept in this morning, plans are to wander down to Costco with a neighbor and pick up a few things. Definately need cat food, the hoard has

I am SOOOOO looking forward to this coming Tuesday. Scott Stanis who does the comic Prickly City has been running strips that explain EXACTLY how I've been feeling about all the crap ads and phone calls and stuff we're being bombarded with:

Ick....

Got a headache today and it doesn't want to go away. Time for more apsirin. Had a minor panic attack this morning. I couldn't find my camera. It wasn't in my purse or backpack and I didn't see it at home or in the car. Nor was it around my desk at work or up in the breakroom. Then I remembered I had an extra bag with me when I went home on Tuesday with the kitty cat mask I never got around to wearing on Tuesday (I so loved wearing the tiara I didn't want to take it off LOL). I then remember I'd scooped a bunch of stuff in that and it is currently sitting on the futon in the living room. So I am camera-less today. Yesterday was an blech day cooking-wise. We hit Winco and picked up some chicken and sides and hid out in the bedroom eating chicken and watching TV. Got caught up ont he previous two weeks of Criminal Minds and last nights episode of Bones . Also finshed the episode of The Hungry Detective we'd started the other night. Good thing we'd already

I so hope this is true: A New Orleans lawyer sought an FHA loan for a client. He was told the loan would be granted if he could prove satisfactory title to a parcel of property being offered as collateral. The title to the property dated back to 1803, which took the Lawyer three months to track down. After sending the information to the FHA, he received the following reply (Actual letter): "Upon review of your letter adjoining your client's loan application, we note that the request is supported by an Abstract of Title. While we compliment the able manner in which you have prepared and presented the application, we must point out that you have only cleared title to the proposed collateral property back to 1803.. Before final approval can be accorded, it will be necessary to clear the title back to its origin." Annoyed, the lawyer responded as follows (actual letter): "Your letter regarding title in Case No. 189156 has been received. I note that you wish to have title
