SIGH!!!

I'm really starting to wonder. I am aquainted with too darned many folk who have made the national news. One of the kids I mentioned in an earlier post about the burglery and the pot plants works for the library, a Saudi Arabian graduate student who is been jailed by the feds and not allowed a speedy trial because the feds don't have a case and actually going to trial means they will look like fools is someone I've helped professionally in my capacity as a Access Services worker here at the library, now a faculty member I've worked with in that same capacity has hit the AP wires. Ohhh, the weather outside is frightful...

The temp is dropping like a rock, it is down to 55 degrees fahrenheit and the wind is up to 21 mph with gusts up to 32 mph. And the clouds are rolling in. In way this is good. Seems they've had to turn the chillers that supplied cool air to the buildings off for repair and upgrade. The poor folk in the offices up on 2nd floor were dealing with 80 degree temps in a space with no windows. For a huge open space, it gets bloody hot in this building. Also doesn't help when the air circulation gets turned off, the lack of oxygen makes it REAL hard to function Yesterday was lovely, tho at home we had to open up the front door most of the evening to try and cool the place off. Oh well, that is spring in North Idaho for you, you freeze, roast and freeze again until it is summer and then we roast for a couple of months (unless the weather decides to be contrary and it stays pretty cool and wet all summer). As the saying goes, don't like the weather in Moscow? Wait 5 minutes. I rememb

Oh, for pete's sake!!!!!!

This is getting totally out of hand. Now a city in Poland has decided that the mermaid who is their symbol on the towns coat of arms isn't attractive enough because her boobs are too small and her hips are too big When is this insanity of trying to mold EVERYONE into a singular idea of attractiveness going to end. It is bad enough that we have 5 year old girls refusing to eat becasue they are "too fat", mothers feeding their infants fat free milk because they have bought into the "thin=healthy", boys and men are starting to develop eating disorders and body image disorders, NOW mythical creatures can't be beautiful unless they have plastic surgery to conform. SIGH!!!!! (2/13/06: original link to story no longer there)

Kewlness

The University has added another webcam showing various buildings and projects around the campus. The newest one is for the remodeling of the UCC, turning it into The Teaching and Learning Center . This building is right next to the library so I get to watch what is going on whenever I am on break. For further time wasters, you can check out the all the webcams here :D

Decisions, decisions

Spring has sprung, the weather is nice and the new spring clothes have hit the stores. So now I have to decide the most important question of the year, to buy a new bathing suit or make do with my old ones One suit I have had for about 4 years now, the other 3 years. The oldest suit I got from Love Your Peaches and I love it. The other suit I bought from WalMart when it hit the sale rack. I like tankini's, they fit much better then a one piece suit since I am much smaller on top then I am on the bottom. I much prefer the fit of the LYP suit, since Janelle specifically designs for the larger woman. I also love the fact that the suits are made to order and I can get them in any color or color combination I want. But when you are on a limited budget, that can make a big dent in it. But you do get what you pay for. I looked at Walmart when we were there yesterday, they have a few nice suits, about half the cost of LYP, but such a limited selection. There was one suit I really liked, i

A lovely weekend

Even tho Saturday the weather sucked. Cold and windy with a bit of rain. Yesterday was ooooo so nice and sunny and we had the windows down in the car when we went out shopping. So, got my hair cut on Saturday. It is really taking some getting used to as I went shorter then I'd really planned, tho not so short that I would have a heart attack on looking in the mirror in the morning LOL. It is a short, sassy, but more sophisticated cut and my hair is trying to do what it darn well pleases But that is to be expected, it usually does when I get it cut shorter. While my hair is baby fine, I've got a lot of it (good thing too, I've been shedding greatly hehehehe) and when it gets long it gets really heavy, so when I cut it is goes "I'm FREE!!!!!" and flys every which way. So I get to play with it in the mornings and train it to go where I want it, but that should be fun We did get the beer bottled on Sat, 12 champagne bottles and 23 1/2 beer bottles. We sipped a lit

Time wasting on a Friday

Been going thru my referres stats again and seeing where folk are hitting my journal from. Most are linking back from the journals I've been tagging when I google "bravenet journal" and various different words added or when I check blo.gs to see what new journals have been added. A few are still coming in from some pretty icky porn sites I've got to make sure I don't click back on those when I am on my work computer. Some are folk who type some words into a search engine and then click enter. It is interesting to see where my journal ranks in the searches. Some of the searches: "naomi wolfe pic", "flylady scam", "invented the power bar"," blog "like a cowgirl"", "human woman bravenet", ""Brian Maxwell" die heart attack" "recipe chicken parmasian". Interesting stuff

Aaaaaahhhhhhh! Friday!

I really wish we can get TPTB to switch the week around. Two days of work and 5 days of weekend We'd still get paid the same amount as if we worked 40 hours in the week of course hehehehehe No really big plans for the weekend. We are finally going to get the beer bottled tomorrow, it has slowed down to a buble every 1.5-2 minutes, so it is ready. We've the bottles soaking in the sink and will finish cleaning and sterilizing them tomorrow morning. I'm getting my hair cut tomorrow It has been a while since I've had it cut, so it is below my shoulders. It is very fine and thick, so when it gets long, it gets heavy and there isn't a darn thing I can do with it except to let it hang loose or pull it back in a ponytail. I'm going to get it cut short, but not sure about the style as yet. I'll go in early and look thru some books and see what catches my fancy. Our friend who comes over and does laundry at our place will be over tomorrow. We've plans for a spaghe

Word of advice....

if you are going to call the cops to report a burglary, put any and all pot plants somewhere other then out in the living room Seems a couple of local kids called the cops to report a burglary and when the Sheriff's deputies arrived, noticed a couple of pot plants sitting in the living room. Cops then got written permission from the kids to search the house and they found a bag of seeds and a small grow room (of course, the way the cops tend to inflate the amount and dollar worth of any drugs they find, it was probably a couple more plants and a grow light). Now both kids are now charged with manufacture (how the hell can you manufacture a living organism ) marijuana for sale. With luck, they will get a decent lawyer who can plead them down to a misdemeanor charge. Personally, marijuana needs to be decriminalized and treated like tobacco. Imagine all the tax revenue the government can generate

To ask if anyone has seen this man . Frederick David Russell is wanted for 3 counts of vehicular homicide and 3 counts of vehicular assault. He jumped bail before a mandatory court appearance in October 2001 and has not been seen since. He now can be anywhere in the world. Eat right, exercise, die anyway

News reports the other day had a story about Brian Maxwell, the guy who was a marathon runner who invented the Power Bar. He dropped dead at the age of 51 of a heart attack . Then there is the story out of Sequim Washington about Eva Fridell who passed away at 110 years old. She shunned exercise, milk and loved sweets, Irish coffee and the occasional beer. There is a lesson in here somewhere (note 2/13/06: the original articles have expired from the sites, so no links on this post)

Monday again hehehehehe

Weekends go WAY to fast, esp when the weather is nice. Opened up the living room yesterday, ooooooohhhh it was so nice to have fresh air and sunshine coming in thru the windows. Didn't bottle the beer yesterday, our friend who is going to help us with that (he's kind enough to offer advice and store the bottles for us while they age) felt that it was still bubbling away happily and we didn't want to bottle too early. So maybe later this week or possibly this next weekend. We went over everything I did with it and he feels we probably should get a half decent brew out of it, whihc wouldn't be too bad for a beginner Did the FlyFest on Sat, it is really great to have faces to go with the names of folk I've been chatting with via email for a while now. Also made a connection with someone else who gardens and got a tip on where to find the red worms I need for my worm compost bin. Walmart is starting to carry them, along with night crawlers, so now I won't have to ma

YEE HAW! IT'S FRIDAY!!!!!!

Looking forward to a good weekend. FlyFest with the other local flybabies tomorrow at a local restaruant and then Circle tomorrow night. Also planning on bottling our very first batch of beer this weekend, probably on Sunday. Tonights plan is to have dinner, then do some serious imbibing of ethanol based beverages and watch TV. We recorded Undercover Brother on the PVR and have several Night Courts and Buzz Lightyears to watch. Had to do a bit of kitty dentistry last night. KiKi was making funny growling noises when I was in the kitchen last night cleaning up and sticking her paw in her mouth. So after chasing her all over the house, we finally cornered her under the end table and I had to drag a screaming kitty out from under it by her hind end. She was NOT a happy kitty. Wrapped her up in a towel and hubby held her while I pried open her mouth to see what I could see. At first I thought she'd broken a tooth, then I got a good look and realized she had something wedged between the

Food Fights - article on Tech Central Station

Sandy Swarzc has another great article out, this time about the the politicalization of eating and a lot of the mis-information given out by the food police: Food Fights By Sandy Szwarc Published 03/19/2004 On March 10, Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson launched public service announcements depicting dismembered body parts of fat people -- double chins, stomachs, buttocks, and thighs -- caught in grocery cart wheels, found by children along the beach and tripped over by mall shoppers. They're part of Thompson's efforts to educate Americans about obesity and persuade them to change their eating habits by showing fat people what they should "lose." Yes, eating is becoming political. Our government is increasingly adopting the false science of a special interest group intent on making sure we all eat what they think we should -- and look and behave acceptably, too. If we're not careful, this new eugenics will see to it we're no longer free to eat

OOOOOOOOOO

Popped out at lunch to check out a 30-30 lever action rifle my hubby came across. Sweet little rifle, practically new in box and going for a really good price. Only problem is, I would be getting it for a hunting rifle and while it will be great for deer, I want to try for an elk and apparently 30-30 is very marginal, unless you get really close. Now, I'm not planning on trying for anything further away then 50 yards or so, no more then 100, even with a scope. So we are checking with our various sources and folk who are a bit better in the know for their opinions. One reason I want a lever action rifle is it what feels "right" to me. It may be because I try and channel some of my great grandmothers , the fact I really don't care for any other shotguns other then my mule eared double barreled coach gun may be a good sign I'm just an old fashioned girl at heart when it comes to firearms (okay, give me a MAC 10 and a whole lotta ammo and I am a happy camper heheheheh

Oy vey

Started off this morning not wanting to wake up, finally did, got my coffee, figured out what to have for lunch, got dressed, packed all my stuff out to the car (hubby wonders if I carry enough stuff around. I only had my purse (all 10 pounds of it ) and my stuff I haul to work (books, water, mini fm radio, other odds and sods)), hopped in, hubby and I headed down the road to discover we had a flat tire. SIGH! So, we stopped, and we changed the tire (read: I did most of the work , I ain't letting hubby do ANYTHING that will put him in the wheelchair permanently). So, we got the tire changed. I've never had to have 2 people to do it, but then again I always drove smaller cars, the Forester is MUCH bigger then my little itty bitty Escort. So we turned around, popped back in the house so I could change into some clean clothes and finally got to work. Only 1/2 hour late. But the pink flamingo on the Ag Sci lawn made up for it

Happy St Patrick's Day

Hope everyone is having a good day, it is also Hump Day, which means we are halfway to the weekend :D Finally got to sleep last night, I think the 2 burritos smothered in sour cream helped, as did finally replacing that song in my head. Had a bitch time waking up this morning tho, most definately NOT a morning person. Dinner tonight is corned beef, at someone else's house LOL. Tho I'm bringing the cauliflower/broccoli in cheese sauce and the frozen yogurt. So won't have much by way of dishes to deal with :D

ARRGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

It happens very rarely, considering the problems I have with sleeping, but tonight I can't seem to fall asleep sigh! Normally I will fall asleep within 15 minutes of my head hitting the pillow, then I will proceed to wake up several times a night. But not tonight. Part of the problem is I have part of a Frank Hayes filk skipping thru my brain and I can't change the channels to try and get another song to play. Well, I think I'll watch a bit more telly (blueberry festival on All-American Festivals on Food Network, then UnWrapped), check my mail, do so blog hopping and then maybe I will be tired enough to fall asleep. If I had any milk in the house I'd try the warm milk trick, but I've not enough to have half a cup :(

Glutton for punishment

Why oh why do I keep on reading a book I am not particularly interested in? Esp since I work in a library and can return it and find a new one. I just finished one of the newer Xanth novels we have and am very dis-satisfied with the whole experience. Now don't get me wrong, I love the Xanth novels, at least the early ones, I have about 10 of them in my collection. But the last several I've read have left me flat, and I LOVE puns :D But they feel quite labored and in a couple of cases, it feels like he's beating folk around the head with THE MESSAGE he seems to have of late (in the case of the last couple was tolerance and the character of Breanna of the Black Wave). Now, I don't mind themes, such as talking about tolerance and such, but it when it beats you over the head in several books and the charactor starts getting obnoxious in her complaints and behavior and has turned into a one note charactor, then it is time to give it up and find something else to write about.

I hate Mondays... Oh wait! It's Tuesday!

Feels like a Monday tho. Didn't get much sleep. Hubby doesn't sleep well, so I don't sleep well (haven't really slept well since developing the Graves' disease, but after 7 years you'd think I'd be used to it by now, sigh!). Gave away part of my childhood yesterday, been seriously bummed about it ever since. I'd a lot of stuff animals and dolls that I'd packed up in anticipation of cleaning and possibly giving to the hospital for the children's ward. But the bag lived in my front hall closet and of course I never had time to clean them up. Yesterday we took a bunch of stuff to the Goodwill drop off, stuff toys included (along with a set of vinyl cushions that are almost as old as I am. I won't say how old, but the colors were burnt orange and not quite harvest gold :D ). Goddess I want those toys back. I know they will now become part of someone else's childhood memories, I know most of them I hadn't looked at since bagging them and p

Ehhhh

Okay, this is spring break and we didn't have enough student staff sign up to work the weekend, so I get the fun and joy of working the 5:30pm-10pm shift. it has been a LONG time since i've had to work a night shift. I was amazed at how many people were here when i got to work, but the place is slowly clearing out (btw, please excuse any typos i don't catch and such, i'm attempting to use a laptop loaded with Exploder and having an interesting time of it. I prefer Mozilla for my browser, Exploder SUCKS!!!! . So, anyways, managed to find homes for all the jigsaw puzzles I cleared from my front closet, tho I kept a couple for myself. No self-respecting household should be without 1 or 2 jigsaw puzzles for when the cable/satellite dish goes out hehehehehe. Went to a planning meeting for Equinox next weekend. I'm going to be a busy bee that day, Flyfest in the early part of the day and then Circle that night. I get to be Hecate for part of it. Should be fun, i've be

A quiet day

Just kinda puttered about today. It was nice out, but not nice enough to open up windows to air out the house :( But I opened up some blinds and was able to get some daylight in :) Finally tackled the front hallway and closet. Rather then do it in one swell foop I take FlyLady's advice and do everything in 15 minute chunks. So rather then spend ALL day focused on the hallway and closet I was able to get other things done AND actually accomplished what I wanted. Before I would dive in and get fustrated and tired and then end up not getting ANYTHING done. So now I've managed to pitch a lot of stuff, got the things that had been living on my work space in my kitchen that needed to go into the closet IN the closet, and now I have a lot more room and uncluttered space in my kitchen :D So I am currently making frozen yogurt after having fajitas for dinner and watching some anime we recorded the other night. All in all, a very nice day :)

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple

A whimsical poem for today, tho I'm not waiting until I'm old to wear purple :D Warning by Jennie Joseph When I am an old woman I shall wear purple With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me, And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells And run my stick along the public railings And make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain And pick the flowers in other people's gardens And learn to spit. You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat And eat three pounds of sausages at one go Or only bread and pickle for a week And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes. But now we must have clothes to keep us dry And pay our rent and not swear in the street And set a good example for the children. We will have friends to dinner and read the pape

Neat link

Found this on Kimberley's journal. It is called Freecycle and this is part of their mission statement: "The worldwide (!) Freecycle Network is made up of many individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. Each local group is run by a local volunteer moderator (them's good people). Membership is free." Way kewl Tiptoeing thru their list of groups, there is one in the Spokane area: Spokane Freecycle .

Amazing what one can waste time on

I like tiptoeing thru the statistics for the various services I have thru Bravenet. Let's face it, when we have journals and webpages we like to know that people are looking at them and tend to be curious who they might be or at least where they are from. It is an ego thing. I know I feel a bit down when I see that the numbers on my Bravenet counter on my personal webpage aren't climbing very fast Makes me wonder if it is worth the effort. But then there are days when I see hits galore and decide, yeah it's worth it I'm finding the statistics and referrers for the journal to be rather interesting tho. I have left my addy at various other journals and can see that folk are finding mine thru the tags, just like I'm finding other's thru tags they leave on journals I've searched out. Originally it was yahoo and google searches for bravenet journals as search words, but I've been noticing some rather interesting referers coming thru the various search engine

Recipe - elk sausage spread

This is something I came up with. A friend had given us some elk sausage, kinda like brats, and we finally got around to trying them out this last weekend. Up until recently I'd never had elk and wasn't sure I'd like it. I've taken up hunting when I was able to try venison and liked it, but I wasn't sure about elk. My friend had brought some elk steaks she'd gotten from a relative who hunts over and we gave it a try. YUM!!!!!!! So she scored us the sausage. It was delish, but a bit too spicy for DH, so we had leftovers. So I tried thinking what I could do with the leftovers that would cool down the spiciness a bit. I had a sudden flash of tzatiki sauce, but instead of yogurt, which I thought would be too sharp a flavor, I decided on sour cream instead. So, here is what I came up with: 1 cup sour cream 1/2 a good sized cucumber 1 1/2 links spicy elk sausage, cooked (I think this would work wll with a hot italian sausage also) Peel and fine chop cucumber. Chop sa

Homage to my Hips these hips are big hips they need space to move around in. they don't fit into little petty places. these hips are free hips. they don't like to be held back. these hips have never been enslaved, they go where they want to go they do what they want to do. these hips are mighty hips. i have known them to put a spell on a man and spin him like a top! Damn!

Another good actor gone. Paul Winfield died Sunday at the age of 62 from a heart attack. The first time I remember watching one of his performances was Sounder in 1972 and I remember being in tears at the end of the movie when his character, the father sent to prison for a petty crime, finally comes home to his family. I enjoyed seeing him turn up in other roles, such as Captain Terrell in Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, the Mirror in the Charmings, the voice of Lucious Sweet in an episode of the Simpsons (oh that man had a wonderful voice) and the Rev Martin Luther King Jr in the miniseries "King" Paul, you will be missed. I raise a glass of my favorite brew in your honor. (((((((((((CRASH)))))))))))

MMMMMMMMMMMMMM

Even tho it is Monday, it is nice. The beer is bubbling happily in it's carboy, so I did something right Weather Bug is reading 62 degrees F outside and the only bad thing about that is I am stuck indoors, instead of being at home playing in my garden :( All in all, it hasn't been a bad day. Hid out over at the Women's Center for lunch. They were having a brown bag lecture I didn't know about. I really should start paying attention to the schedule so I am forwarned about them. A women from the American Language and Culture Program here on campus talked a bit about teaching in the Middle East and read poems by Middle Eastern Women. Some very powerful poetry! This in celebration of International Women's Day.

A nice, fairly low key day

Tho beer brewing isn't as simple as it looks, esp if you've never done it before and are readnig the instructions off of photocopied pages that came with the brew kit :D but we've now got a carboy of what is suposed to be a heffen-weisen (couldn't find the specified yeast, so went with a regular ale yeast) sitting in the kitchen and hopefully we'll be seeing some fermentation tomorrow. We are definately going to have to get our hands of some basic brewers books so we'll actually know what we are doing know what we are doing :P So hopefully in about 10-14 days we'll actually have some beer to bottle and then in 7 days after that, some to drink

Oh how I love where I live

Folks I talk with from other parts of the country sometimes ask why I live here in North Idaho. Well, besides being born here and this is where I feel the most at home after living all over as a Navy Brat, tonight I popped out to the porch to empty the kitchen compost bucket into my small composter when I looked across the road to the corral. Grazing in said corral were 3 Ambercrombies (my hubby's name for the deer that live around here). What an awsome site. They looked up and then went back to grazing. Wouldn't see that in the big city :D Hopefully we can get some good frame grabs from the video we got, in which case I'll have some new pics to put on my web page.

It's Friday again!

YAY!!!!!!!! Currently listening to Toby Keith on the internet radion, he's singing "I love this bar" . I love this song and the video is great. I wish I could find a place like that to hang out in, tho my bar hanging out days are long over I'm too much a homebody now and bedtime is getting earlier and earlier hehehehehe The radio station I am listening to is out of Red Deer AB Canada, CKGY and I found them using the Radio-Locator site I have in my links section on the left of this page.

Why I am sleepy

This morning started at 4 am. Not intentionally, because the power in our house went off. Hubby has a CPAP and when that went quiet, I woke up as did he. The clock radio was off and the bedside lights wouldn't come on. So up we got. We are well prepared for a power outage, hubby kept saying "See I wasn't paranoid!" LOL He collects flashlights and we have one for practically every room. No matter, we also have those touch lights in prominent places so we have light to let us find all the candles (scratch a pagan and you'll find candle wax :D ) and oil lamps I collect hehehehe. We also have a kerosene heater we keep fueled and ready, so once we had the light situation settled in the living room we got the heat going, along with a pot of water on top of the heater to heat up water for tea. We still haven't heard exactly why the power went off, but I've people say there was several bright flashes near the substation about 5:30 so more of the town probably went

I am the Fat Girl by Allie

I am the Fat Girl I am a piece of everything beautiful in the world this is why I am larger than you I am made of so many wondrous things you could never imagine sometimes, you pause to look at me deeply I am everything in my past My childhood house rests on my shoulders The neighbors' yards, no boundaries I am a Chinese maple tree, with stairs in its boughs I am those first stars I am the water fountain, outside that I made a wish in thirty minutes ago I am the portrait artist who tries to catch twinkles inside your eyes I am the wings of all the last breaths of flight I am the child skipping without reason I am a gentle newborn sigh I am the Virtuous Lion outside The New York Library I am the angel who pushes shadows out of harm's way I am the moon shimmering on the pond The stick the dog laps into its happy mouth I am the moment before two hands join So as for your comments: "Look at the Fat Girl," "You have such a pretty face, if only you would lose weight&qu

OOOO ICK!!!!

It's snowing! They are talking about some accumulation, but I'm hoping there won't be much and it goes away real fast. I don't mind rain right now, but I want winter to be over and spring to have sprung. I'm getting cabin fever and want to be able to open up the house all the time.

The Woman Who Was Too Big For God

The Woman Who Was Too Big For God by Shannon O'Donnell She was big. No question about it. Size 12 feet. Broad hips. Big belly. Generous breasts. Wide shoulders. Big smile too. Even her voice was big,her laughter full and rich, capable of filling an auditorium. Some things fit, most didn't. She searched for chairs without arms, hard to find in most places where the chairs cut into her back and sides. She eyed every couch before she sat down, gauging its worthiness and her ability to rise gracefully from it. She asked for seat belt extensions and the window seat when she flew so her bulk wouldn't intrude too much on her neighbor. Once, when she traveled to Europe, she was stuck in the middle of five seats in the middle section of the plane. The whole long trip, she sat with her arms folded across her stomach and tried not to take up too much room. She woke up, every now and then, and from the looks of the people around her, she knew her snore was big enough to drown out the s

Monday Monday

Amazing how the littlest things will make one happy, like brand new 24 quart professional grade stock pot hehehehehehe. Went shopping on Sat and came home with the stock pot, so I'll have no excuse now this next turkey day to not have the carcass of the bird in a pot and stocking away as soon as dinner is over. It is also big enough that we are looking at attempting our very first batch of beer this weekend. We were going to do mead, I have my late dad's recipe for it, but has anyone checked out the price of honey lately Ye GODS!!!!!!! Since we have all the stuff for beer we're going to do that first and either hope the price of honey comes down enough or we locate a local source that isn't going to cost a small arm and leg. Am really getting the gardening bug. I finally put my poor avacado sprout into some dirt. There were a ton of roots and it had sent up a shoot about 3 inches long, so I figured it was finally time. Now I'm going to look at stating some veggies i
