July 20, 1969

On this date in 1969, the first manned moon landing happened. I was in 2nd grade at the time, living on base at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard where my dad was stationed. When Apollo 11 was launched, my parents got my brother and me out of bed in the wee hours of the morning and plopped us in front of the black and white TV and we watched in total facination as history happened right before our eyes. When the astronauts arrived a the moon, we were again glued to our TV set.

Check out Google today, they are honoring the day with a neat header. If you clicke the header it will take you to Google Moon. You can see where all the moon missions landed and if you zoom in you can see what the moon is made of.
