Listening to the radio

out of Canada. Alberta is considering raising the legal drinking age from 18 to 19 and they have a lot of folk calling in giving their opinions. As one lady said, doesn't matter what they do with the drinking age, kids are going to drink, legal or not. Someone called in to say they should raise it to 21.

Now, here in the States the legal age is 21 and I think that should be lowered, I'm not sure about a legal drinking age of 18 tho. A lot of 18 year olds are still in high school and a lot of their peers might not yet be 18, so I think that would cause a lot of problems. Idaho used to have a drinking age of 19 (that is until the federal government blackmailed us into raising it by threatening to withhold highway funds). Now 19 was a good age, you are well out of high school and either in college or well in to the workforce.

Then again, at 18 you are legally an adult, even if you are still in high school, they can draft your ass into the military and hand you a rifle and order you to go out to shoot people, you can legally sign a contract, you can move out of the house and live on your own, you can go out and get a job and not have to deal with the laws regarding minors in the workforce.

So it is a toughy, at 18 we consider people to be fully functioning adults, but we treat them like children for certain things. Maybe a compromise, at 18 you can get beer and wine, at 19 you can buy everything else.
