Go Sheriff Rausch!

From todays Lewiston Trib:

Wayne Rausch says Moscow - not to mention UI campus - would be safer places if more qualified people were packing

MOSCOW - With 540 persons carrying concealed weapons permits in Latah County, Sheriff Wayne Rausch said Tuesday he wouldn't mind if more applied and qualified to carry guns.

That includes on the campus of the University of Idaho.

"In my opinion, if there were more students with CPWs, the world would be safer," Rausch said. He pointed out virtually anyone can carry a weapon in plain sight.

People who seek concealed weapons permits, the sheriff said, are rarely a problem. They're screened and generally pack firearms within limits of the law. "Most of those are good citizens," said Rausch, who is the only law enforcement officer in the county with the authority to issue concealed weapons permits.

"Just because we (law enforcement officers) are charged with protecting the public, doesn't mean the public shouldn't be able to protect itself," Rausch said.

I would link to the article, but unfortunately they have it behind a paid subscription wall. Thank goodness for UI Library access since I am an employee at the U.

There is also a student who is pursuing a case against the university for denying him his rights. My hubby has been going thru our state reps because the university has now decided to declare the campus a victim disarmament zone and disallow anyone with a CWP (concealed weapons permit) from being on campus with their firearm, in violation of state law. State law only bars CWPs from K-12. Now the board of regents has in place a policy saying students, staff and faculty could not carry, but anyone else could. So it will be interesting to see what happens as I know there are a lot more people who are looking at getting the whole thing changed.

The whole "students will feel safer" argument doesn't wash. Up until the 80s or later you could keep your firearms in your dorm room, heck, the older dorms had closets specifically built to house firearms. Universities and colleges in Utah have concealed carry and interestingly enough there hasn't been a blood bath and there aren't big protests from people claiming they don't feel safe on campus. The only people who screamed were the regents and university admins who tried their darndest to deny people their rights.

The most interesting thing about this is there hasn't been a single blip on the Vision2020 email list.
