Let is snow, let is snow, let it snow!

We have about an inch or so out at our place and we have a weather advisory for snow until about 4pm today. Amazingly enough, there were very few idiots on the road this morning, we only saw 1 example of 4-wheel syndrome. Everyone was driving pretty slowly and keeping a good distance between each other. The only real problem was the number of poeple who didn't seem to realize that even tho it is daytime, they needed to turn their lights on. The kitten is confused, this is his first real snow and he isn't real sure what to do with it. Last we saw of him he was walking gingerly across the snow back to under the porch. Hehehehe, I can't wait for a nice deep accumulation so I can drop him into it and see what he does.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As mentioned in my comment to the previous post, the problem with the oven was the one wire to the connector to the element broke, so it was a very easy and very cheap fix (cheap in that the guy at Howard Hughes gave us the connector for free, and it was his last one ) Needless to say we will definately be doing more business with them, be nice to folk and they will come back with money to buy things (since we do need a new fridge, I'll be looking there first, they had some NICE Amana fridges for reasonable prices). So I now have a couple of the stuffing dishes in the oven, I made gravy last night and poured some over each dish to add more flavor. I have the carcass in the stock pot with some celery stalks. There should be enough stuffing in the carcass to add extra flavor. I'm surfing the net for Yule/Christmas elements to get my journal into the holiday mood. I was planning on doing it yesterday, but after the event of Thursday, that didn't happen LOL Speaking of decorat

Best laid plans

Things did not go as well as I had planned. Seems the oven decided to crap out. The bottom element pretty much died, the turkey ended up over at the neighbor's house after several hours in my oven WAHHH!! So instead of a nice dinner around 4, we ended up eating the food in shifts and finelly got the turkey after 7 pm WAHHH! I STILL haven't made the gravy and most of the stuffing dishes still have to be cookedWAHHH! So much for fixing my mom a wonderful thanksgiving dinner. She understood, I'm sure she's had her share of dinner disasters. Hubby is going to take the oven apart today to see what happened.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!

The turkey is in the oven and I have the frostbite to prove it LOL It never seems to fail, no matter how long I thaw a turkey, there is ALWAYS a huge chunk of ice in the middle. Took a lot of cold water and digging, but I finally got it thawed and the neck out. I'll put the neck and the gibblets in water and chicken stiock later on so I have stock for gravey (we like LOTS of gravey) and some liquid to add to the dressing I am baking outside of the bird. I did stuff the bird with my regular stuffing, but hubby says I never make enough, so I am doing extra and figure I'll try a different recipe. I'll be doing an apple-walnut dressing. For my stuffing I used fresh bread, I really hate the dried breadcube stuffing, I think it gets too mushy. I usually just use regular sliced bread, but yesterday I made an egg bread in the bread machine, so I am using it in both stuffings along with the regular bread. I'll start some dinner rolls in the bread macine in a while. No snow as

Countdown to tomorrow

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

No work this week, vacation time. I did wake up a bit early this morning with a headache. Went back to sleep and it started going away until the phone rang and then it came back with a vengence. So I finally got up, popped some aspirin and grabbed a cup of coffee from the pot hubby made as he'd gotten up really early. Phone was for hubby, a client whose computer was trojened, so it looks like we've a little more money coming in this week :) Good thing, as I realized in the wee hours this morning I'm a little low on the food to serve guests department outside of thanksgiving day (afterwards we are fine, but between now and then, eep!). Phone rang again a little later, this time for me. The sleep clinic called and I go in Sat Dec 4th to get wired up and try to sleep in a strange bed without my hubby and kitties. Hubby was surprised they had weekend hours, but we are guessing that the clinic has gotten popular and are running tests as frequently as possible. I'm glad to h

What Part of Thanksgiving Are You?

You Are the Stuffing You're complicated and complex, yet all your pieces fit together. People miss you if you're gone - but they're not sure why. What Part of Thanksgiving Are You?

Sort of lazy Saturday

Puttered about cleaning the living room. Ran one load of laundry and gathered up the recycling. Watched NASCAR and had some friends drop in for a visit. Ran the recycling into the center, took our neighbors recycling in also since we were going there. Hit WinCo to pick up a few things and then back home. Have a pork sirloin roast in the oven, seasoned with garlic powder. Hubby likes roast prok sandwiches, so that is what we'll have for dinner. Got most of the wax melted down into smaller units. Still have one sheet of plain wax to do, right now I am melting the odd colors together, there isn't enough of any one color to do seperately. At some point this weekend I've got to tackle Mister as he seemes to be having cat box problems. He is having problems staying clean, so we'll tackle him and give him a bath. He REALLY hates getting a bath, but he doesn't seem to be trying to keep himself as clean as he should (then again he is an old kitty and may just be getting a

Very disappointed in WinCo

Went over after work to buy the turkey and groceries. WinCo has the lowest prices for the turkey and we do like shopping there. Well, they had them for 28 cents a pound BUT you had to spend $50 to get that price!!!!! Granted that included the turkey, but when you only have $40 total to spend on groceries for the next couple of weeks that is completely out of the question. So we said screw that and went back across town to Safeway, where we only had to spend $25 and we only paid 29 cents a pound. So we now have most of what we need and came in less then $30. Still have a few odds and ends we need to get at WinCo, like powdered milk and brown sugar I get in the bulk section, plus the sugar free shasta sodas we like, but that we can get with what we have left from the grocery money. Hit the dollar store for a few odds and sods (TP, dryer sheets) and found some really nice martini glasses. So we picked up 4. They are taller then normal and have a gold rim. Very elegant. Now we have enough

What ever you do....

DON'T EAT THE BREAD IF IT SMELLS EVEN REMOTELY FUNNY!!!!!! Grabbed some bread to bring to make toasted cheese sandwiches for lunch (put cheese on two slices of bread and pop it in the toaster oven VOILA! Quick sandwich). We've had the loaf for about a week and I took a quick sniff. Smelled a little funny, but being that early in the morning I didn't think much of it. Lunch time rolled around and I pulled out my lunch and the funny smell was a little stronger, but being hungry I fixed the sandwiches anyways. Sat down took a bite....ummmmmmm, it tasted a bit off, but being VERY hungry I figured it was my imagination. Now I'm beginning to think I should have not eaten the bread. I'm feeling a bit ick now. Luckily, I get off work soon and my week's vacation starts!!!!! On other fronts, I tried the nasal spray last night and I think I had a much better nights sleep. Hubby thinks so. I do know I still woke up quite a bit, but hubby says he didn't hear me snori

Back from the doc

BP: 118/64, pulse: thru the roof, nasel passages: stuffy, throat: not much room. Verdict: based on what hubby reported about my snoring, my report about various symptoms and such and lack of room in my throat the doc agreed we needed the sleep study. So paperwork filled out, they will send it and hopefully the insurance will cover it (they should). In the meantime, she gave me a sample of nasal spray to see about keeping my nasal passages open at night to help me breath. Oh, and she thinks I have bursitis in my my left hip, based on the stiffness and pain I have when I sit or lie in one place for any length of time. So I need to figure out how to get back into an exercise routine, since the one I like got canceled becasue the U decided the jocks needed the pool more then the employees in the wellness program. Going to talk with the ladies of my coven and look at maybe doing belly dancing more often then once in a while. I hate exercising by myself, so I might also rope hubby into doi

It's almost Friday, it's almost Friday, it's almost Friday!!!!

Long, icky week. I've been feeling like crap most of it, not getting enough sleep is DEFINATELY not helping. Doctor's appointment today right after lunch, so will see about getting that referral to the sleep clinic. I've also been dealing with tachycardia attacks after eating, so I am most definately NOT a happy camper. Not sure what is triggering it off, a particular food or seasoning. Weather is cold and icky and supposed to be getting even colder this weekend. Am definately glad we've gotten the place buttoned up. Mom arrives Monday, she'll be staying about 5 days, tho she will be staying at a hotel. Since the 2nd bedroom is the office, we've really no place to put guests except in the living room. Our friends don't mind, but putting my mom on the couch just doesn't seem the right thing to do. Tomorrow I'll be taking off work at 3 and we'll be doing our turkey day grocery shopping (as well as the regular shopping). I'm looking at differe

Monday, again

Actually managed to get a bit done this weekend. I finally did get those pork roasts brining yesterday, I'll rinse and freeze them tonight. Moved a bunch of stuff out to the shed after putting them in plastic garbage bags to protect them. Since I don't have space to set up my dining room table, I fianlly moved the leaves out to the shed. Mahongany is HEAVY!!!!! They are double wrapped in plastic so they should do okay out there. I stored all the fans out there also. We've room in the front hall closet now to put the steam cleaner and the vacuum cleaner in there now. Hubby had a good idea about storing all the odds and sods candle wax I have. So we picked up some disposable aluminum cakes pans at the Dollar store (I do so love that place) and I'm melting all the colors down and making small flat blocks so they will store easier. I do plan on making some candles this winter, one can NEVER have too many candles hehehehehehe Starting to plan t-day dinner next week. Since

Saturday night

and here I am at work:( It is not too bad, Saturday nights tend to be slow. We had a desk worker whose family came into town and she couldn't find anyone to take her whole shift and none of the other permanent staff could help cover, so I'm it :D So here I sit, jumping up and down to help the few folk here, attempting to not throw this laptop across the room LOL I like haveing a real mouse, the button and the pad take a LOT of getting used to. Not too mention, I definately prefer real sized keyboards. Oh well, at least I have something to while waiting for the next patron :) Didn't do martinis last night, hubby was hankering for marguaritas, so we did up a pitcher of those instead. Very yummy. Slept in this morning, then puttered about a little. We ripped a 7'6" board down to make a shelf for in the bedroom over the mirror and dresser. I'm using it to display my wigs and hats on wig heads. It will look really cool. Managed to put a splinter in my finger unde

The Armed Woman's Attitude Test

The Armed Woman's Attitude Test by Massad Ayoob printed in "Women & Guns", Dec '91 issue The media, both entertainment and news, have grotesquely skewed the public image of women who choose to responsibly own firearms for self-defense. Unfortunately, constant exposure to public image can affect self-image. That can be dangerous, whether the result is a woman who becomes anorexic or a woman who allows herself to be talked out of exercising her absolute right to effective personal protection. This Armed Woman's Attitude Test is offered in the hopes of putting some of the false images into a proper perspective. Please circle A, B, or C in answer to each question. 1. What is the real meaning of that pink T-shirt with a revolver on it that says, "The ultimate in feminine protection?" A. Obviously a plot by seditious gun fanatics from the NRA. B. Ultimate force equals ultimate personal protection. C. A 9mm for "ligh

It's FRIDAY!!!!!

and I am currently coffeeless. For some reason the coffee maker didn't go off at 7am this morning, so I had to turn it on manually, so in a few I will have my mocha. I'm definately going to need it, I didn't get much sleep last night (as if that is a big surprise LOL), so am looking forward to turning the alarms off tonight and hopefully sleeping in this weekend. Picked up 3 sirloin pork roasts the other night, I'll brine them tonight and then get them in the freezer. Starting to plan for Thanksgiving, my mom will be here and I've never cooked T-Day dinner for any of my family. Got a really nice recipe for mashed potatos from one of the Flybabies on the Idaho FlyLady list, I've been using sour cream instead of milk for mine, but she also uses cream cheese, so I think I'll give that a try this year. Make them extra yummy. Well, smells like coffee is ready and I still have to convince hubby he really, really wants to get out of bed. I think he got a worst n

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders Fields by Lt. Col. John McCrae, M.D. (1872-1918) Canadian Army In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

The Story of the Unknown Soldier

The Story of the Unknown Soldier Armistice Day was observed all over the United States by veteran's parades, public services both religious and secular, with two minutes of silence to honor the dead. In 1920, the British Unknown Soldier was buried in Westminster Abbey, the burial place of kings and queens; that same year a French Unknown Soldier was interred at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, where a perpetual flame burns. In 1921, the American Unknown Soldier, symbolizing all the unknown dead, was chosen in an unusual way. Six soldiers of the American Army of Occupation in Germany were selected from different sectors to act as pallbearers. They met at Chalons-sur-Marne, and were interviewed by General Rogers. Next day, Sergeant Edward F. Younger of the 59th Infantry was asked to make a choice among four caskets, with unidentified bodies disinterred from American cemeteries at Bony, Belleau Wo

May I Salute You?

May I Salute You? By Patricia Salwei I approached the entrance to Ft Belvoir's medical facility last year as an old veteran puttered towards me. Easily over 80 years old, stooped and slow, I barely gave him a second glance because on his heels was a full bird colonel. As they approached, I rendered a sharp salute and barked, "Good morning, Sir!" Because they were heel to toe, I began my salute, as the old veteran was about two paces from me. He immediately came to life! Transformed by my greeting, he rose to his full height, returned my salute with pride, and exclaimed, "Good morning, Captain!" I was startled, but the full bird behind him was flabbergasted. The colonel stopped in mid-salute, smiled at me and quietly moved on. As I entered the clinic, the utter beauty of the encounter preoccupied me. What prompted the old man to assume that I was saluting him? Perhaps he just thought, "It's about time!" After all, doesn't a WWII vet outrank

Funny, funny movie

We went and saw Team America: World Police last night. It was hysterical (tho the vomit scene went on longer then necessary, then again, this movie WAS made by the folk who brought us South Park) and skewered EVERYONE equally. I recommend seeing this movie, tho if you have a problem with the "F" word this movie might not be the one for you. We were thinking that we could adapt the Star Trek NG drinking game (every time Troi says "I sense..." take a drink) to Team America. I was thinking of take a drink everytime someone said the "F" word, but everyone would be too hammered within the 1st 10 minutes LOL

Success!

Okay, I didn't do the recipe exactly as written in the cookbook, it called for part shortening, but I used all butter. Hubby had never had snickerdoodles before and he really liked it, so I saved a few from the batch to keep at home. I strongly suspect I'll be making them more often. The nutmeg added a very nice touch. Watched a couple more movies from the free weekend. Attack of the 60 foot centerfold was wonderfully campy. I do recommend it, tho not for little kids. There are a lot of bare breasts but it isn't raunchy, just great camp. We are putting this in our permanent collection. The 2nd movie Q starts of well, but ultimate drags before coming to a rather unsatisfying end. A great performance by Michael Moriarty tho.

Busy night

I'd forgotten we have a special break at work tomorrow and I'd signed up to bring something. Luckily I signed up for dessert, but we are very broke again. Luckily I remembered a cookie I liked to bake when I was a kid, snickerdoodles . Off the top of my head I do believe I have everything I need for it, emailed hubby to pull a couple of cubes of butter out of the freezer to soften up. I'll add a little extra to the cookie tho, I'll add nutmeg to the cinnamon/sugar coating to give it more UMMPH! when you bite into it. Now, I haven't really baked cookies in a long time. It has been a year since I've tried to make peanut butter cookies using splenda and the results left a bit to be desired. I'm not going to experiment tonight tho, I'm going to do the recipe as written in my Betty Crocker cookbook I inherited from Grandma Florence.

Weekend, part 2

I did do a bit more then watch movies this weekend. Saturday morning we went out to where a friend was house/dog sitting and did some hot tubbing after breakfast. It was a very nice house, surrounded by lots of trees. Then we went home and puttered a bit and layed down for a nap. Don't know why we were so tired, but the nap was wonderful. Afterwards I went out and cleaned up my garden. Picked the last of the tomatos in the greenhouse, about a half dozen that hadn't froze. A few tiny bell peppers and then pulled up all the plants and tossed them on the compost pile. I didn't get around to raking up the leaves behind the equipment barn, I'll try and do that this next weekend as I would like to have them on my garden to compost in place and toss some on my compost pile. Put all the glass panels in the shed for storage. Came in to work this morning to discover a pot of plants on my desk. A co-worker upstairs had bought a bunch this weekend and realized she didn't need

My weekend

Had a pretty relaxing one, didn't do a whole heck of a lot. We seemed to have gotten free HBO and Showtime this weekend, so we recorded a few movies to watch that we've been interested in, but didn't want to rent them. Down with Love with Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor. Cute film, I recommend watching once, but it wasn't worth saving to our collection. They almost got the feel of the Rock Hudson/Doris Days films of the 60's, but not quite and there were a quite a number of places where it was definately forced and a couple scenes that went on way to long. But seeing Ewan in a towel made the whole movie worth it Bruce Almighty with Jim Carrey and Morgan Freeman. A very sweet film, tho not one to go into our permanent collection. I do recommend seeing it at least once. It did have me sobbing at the end and my hubby rolling his eyes (he's not big on tear jerkers). Vampires Anonymous . Neat premise, a vampire who goes into 12 step rehab and the problems he

Okay, I now have a doctors appointment on the 18th to see about getting a referral to the sleep clinic. Hubby just called and asked "Have you called the doctor yet?" No, "uh huh!". So I called. I do need to figure out what is going on, hubby says my breathing at night is very shallow and irregular. I do know that during the day when I am awake I breath very shallow. Every once in a while I will notice I haven't taken a breath, which is a bit disconcerting to say the least. Sometimes I will gasp and breath deeply. I think this is in part from the pleuresy I had in high school and the ATDs I had to take for the Graves disease. I did notice that my breathing got very shallow on the PTU and got better when I went off them, tho I never went back to the breathing I had before I got Graves. But we'll see, could be my hubby's sleep apnea is contagious and I caught it LOL

KEWL!! New smilies

These are going to be nice: gardener yummy Shivering (will come in handy this winter hehehehehe) Hissyfit to name a few :D

Stuff

Still waiting to get my subscription to the Idaho Libs Yahoo group approved and trying to figure out where the Idaho Libs website went to. It was there yesterday morning, now I'm getting an internal server error when ever I pop into it. Beginning to wonder if they had a complete and utter meltdown. Oh well, just wait and see. Checked my garden this morning, even with the cover, the poor plants are either gone or failing rapidly. Of course it HAS been dropping into the low 20's for several nights now. I'll go out on Sat and pick anything that is still good (a few tomatos and a couple of bell peppers) and then prep it for winter. I still need to snarf some leaves from behind the equipment barn, they will be great on the garden and on the compost pile. Mister is getting annoying. Little snot has the kitty sniffles and keeps getting out and staying out. He got out yesterday and we haven't seen him since. With luck he's holing up down at Evelyn's. She's a littl

I've decided

I am going to formally declare myself a Libertarian (tho still a little "l" libertarian as I still believe in some programs for helping the disadvantaged as I feel that as human beings we do have a responsibility to help others in need, but the programs as they exist are overbloated with waste and corruption and need to be fixed somehow) and see what I can do to build up the party here in my part of the world to give people other alternatives to the "business as usually" Rep/Dems that we are stuck with now. Hubby suggested I really should get involved, tho I'm still not sure if he is kidding or not when he said I should consider running for county commisioner. He says he's not kidding, someone has to do something to change the system. Hmmmm, I wonder what are the chances of an out of the closet witch has to actually get elected to office? In the meantime I'm signing back up for the Idaho lib email list and checking out the national party and maybe see

I've voted, have you?

I voted on my way to work, just got in a few minutes ago. Polls here opened at 7:30am, much to the surprise of a lot of folk as they didn't really broadcast the early opening time. I heard about it on the morning news on the radio. Even so, a lot of folks DID know about the early opening and the poll worker at my precienct said there was a long line of people waiting to get in. The place was crowded, tho I seemed to have timed it right, the lady said that moment was the first time since opening that our precienct didn't have a line up.

A new month

And one more day until the election. I'll be happy when all the BS campaign commericals go away and then it will be a matter of sitting back and watching all the lawsuits start flying. We've been hearing mumblings about problems with voting machines, in particular people who voted early in Texas, voted a straight Democratic ballot and then having the machine change their vote for presidetn/vice-president to Bush/Cheney, not the Kerry/Edwards vote they had made. Well, according to Snopes, it is true . This was the result of piss poor programing on the part of the company that programed the machines and voters who didn't know they HAD to vote on a referendum item. Those machines have since been removed. With all the screw ups with electronic voting machines, the ease with which the results can be tampered with (there is/was a lawsuit in California against Diebold this year) and the fact that most places are refusing to have paper trails (hmmmmm, no paper trail, no way to act
