Planning ahead

My garden isn't anywhere close to having veggies, but I am already planning for next years garden. I didn't really think about how I was laying out my plants this year and have discovered I could have done better. But I am expecting it to produce some pretty yummy veggies.

The eggplants look like they are going to make it, even the ones I thought were going to bite the big one, so fingers crossed they will start growing and producing (I am looking forward to serious eggplant dishes this summer :D ). The tomatos are hanging in there and the cucumbers are definately making their presence known, esp the one that is growing where I didn't plant any seeds. I figure it got help moving from a kitty who was digging where she shouldn't.

Speaking of kitties, Nicky discovered that if she digs in mommy's garden when mommy is out watering, Nicky gets soaked down with the hose. We had one very surprised kitten LOL

So my plan for the garden next year is to plant cold weather veggies in the ground (lettuce, brocoli, cauliflower, etc) and the tomatos, eggplants and bell peppers all go into containers scattered around the yard. Once the cold weather veggies are done, then I can start other veggies to go thru to the fall. I do want to put in more onions somewhere and garlic also.

As much as I would love to get short barrels, they would be too expensive on our budget, so I am going to try the laundry basket method for containers. You buy cheap laundry baskets at the dollar store, poke holes in the bottom, line it with plastic to keep the soil in and then fill with soil and plant. I'll probably start collecting those over the winter, with luck I can find lots of different colors. Before the weather sets in I'll see about getting cold frames built and then get the gorilla rake put back to gether and then in the srpinf I can cover it in plastic and make a small green house to get an earlier start on my tomatos, eggplants and bell peppers.

Ya know, considering I hated gardening and yard work growing up, I am amazed at how much I am getting into the whole thing :D

Now if I can just get my hands on the right kind of worms for my worm bin locally I would be all set
