Memorial Day

The things they Carried.... They carried P-38 can openers and heat tabs, watches and dog tags, insect repellent, gum, cigarettes, Zippo lighters, salt tablets, compress bandages, ponchos, Kool-Aid, two or three canteens of water, iodine tablets, sterno, LRRP- rations, and C-rations stuffed in socks. They carried standard fatigues, jungle boots, bush hats, flak jackets and steel pots. They carried the M-16 assault rifle. They carried trip flares and Claymore mines, M-60 machine guns, the M-70 grenade launcher, M-14's, CAR-15's, Stoners, Swedish K's, 66mm Laws, shotguns, .45 caliber pistols, silencers, the sound of bullets, rockets, and choppers, and sometimes the sound of silence. They carried C-4 plastic explosives, an assortment of hand grenades, PRC-25 radios, knives and machetes. Some carried napalm, CBU's and large bombs; some risked their lives to rescue others. Some escaped the fear, but dealt with the death and damage. Some made very hard decisions, and some j

Not half bad dlayyyyyyyyyyyy

Now to figure out how to keep the kittes84jf;N off the keyboard!!!!!! Nickey loves keyboards and likes to walk across them to help mommy & daddy type. SIGH! Managed to have a productive day, hauled a bunch of dead computer and stereo stuff to the dump, along with a dead vacuum and a couple of old rat cages. Then a run to the recyclers. Got some of the deck cleared off and worked in the kitchen. Stopped at Camas Prairie Winery and picked up an acrylic under cabinet stemware rack so we can start hanging our wine glasses and other stemware. Our bar/beverage center is looking nice. We've room to install 3 more racks, which should give us more then enough space to hang our stemware. Weather today was iffy, luckily no rain, but very, very windy. Wind has died down a bit this evening andwe had some nice late afternoon sun. Hopefully tomoorw will be a bit nicer so I can do some work outside. We also want to get the flagpole back up (we had to take it down last fall during one of ou

Zippy Picklechunks

Okay, after the previous bitching session here is a funny: This only takes a minute. Please don't be a bore and ruin it. Send it onto everyone you know including the person that sent it to you. Sometimes when you have a stressful day or week, you need some silliness to break up the day. And, if we are honest, we have a lot more stressful days than not. Here is your dose of humor: Follow the instructions to find your new name. Once you have your new name, put it in the Subject box and forward it to friends and family and co-workers. Don't forget to forward it back to the person who sent it to you, so they know you participated. And don't go all adult - a senior manager is now known far and wide as Dorky Gizzardsniffer! Give the scarey lady some choclate and no one gets hurt!

Okay, currently NOT a happy camper right now. My period started a week early, I'm dealing with killer cramps and I am starving. Didn't bring a lunch today as I had no leftovers from dinner last night (fried chicken) so I grabbed some cash and hopped over to the food court at the Commons. Turns out they are closed due to lack of hot water on campus for the next few days. Okay fine, went upstairs to the market, but they don't sell real food (just over priced junk), tho they have a soup thing with a note "Soup sold in food court" SIGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Remember they have a little cafe in the business college, head up the hill. Closed damnit!!!!!! Okay, back down the hill, wait, the coffee shop, stop in, not much. Go back to market, nope, still no real food. Threatening to downpour and as I have no coat or umbrella, hiking across campus to either the SUB or Toxic Slime is out of the question as I really dislike getting soaked to the skin, so it is back to t

WOO HOO!!!!!!

Looks like the wonderful folk at Bravenet have finally gotten a way to show IP addies for posts on the tag board. I'd noticed Wil (Hi Wil) had an IP for some dipwad who'd posted on his tag board, so I popped back here and looked. YAY!!!!!!!!!!! This will definately make tracking down trolls easier. Thanks Bravenet Crew.

Almost Friday!!!!!!!

Did more work on my homepage last night, I THINK I've got all the gallery pages tweaked with text and links back to various pages (tho now I am thinking of it, I didn't work on my CAS gallery, so I think that is tonights project), tho I'm probably going to hold off on background color tweaking of some of them for a while. I've several text pages I want to tweak so they look nicer. I went thru and changed links or deleted ones that were definately dead. Stopped at Wally World to get the kitten a new toy. We were looking for a specific one that we could hang off a hook in the ceiling in the middle of the living room that had lots of tassels and jingle bells. It was Freddy's favorite toy, but the original one will be buried with him so we looked for a replacement. Could we find one? Nope! Checked both pet stores and Wally World. We settled on a furry toy with a jingle bell that is on a string of elastic and tied to a little pole you can mount on a suction cup and st

Primary Day!

So, today is Primary Day here in Idaho, so after work I will wend my way to the fairgrounds and exercise my right to vote. We've a contested seat for state senate, between Gary Schroeder, who is the incumbant with lots of clout on the education committee and a newcomer who's getting LOTS of support from down south and money from out of state who is trying to unseat Gary. Gary is a Republican who has pissed off a lot of the conservatives in the party because he won't play their game. Gary is one of the (extremely) few republicans I would even consider voting for, but he is a very strong supporter of education in this state and a very strong supporter of the University of Idaho and while I don't agree with him on a lot of issues, that support is good enough for me to vote for him. The conservatives are hoping the new guy can unseat Gary and then win in November against whoever the Dems are sending so they can do what they want without anyone with clout in opposition. In

'Babylon 5' actor dies

Awww crap! Dr Franklin was one of my favorite charactors on Babylon 5, I really enjoyed seeing Richard Biggs in other shows, esp Temors: the series . 'Babylon 5' actor dies Richard Biggs played Dr. Stephen Franklin on sci-fi series Tuesday, May 25, 2004 Posted: 9:38 AM EDT (1338 GMT) (CNN) -- Richard Biggs, who played Dr. Stephen Franklin on "Babylon 5" and also had a long run on the soap opera "Days of Our Lives," died Saturday. He was 44, according to the actor's Web site. A posting on a "Babylon 5" message board by J. Michael Straczynski, the sci-fi show's creator, said the cause of death has not been determined but that "paramedics who showed up suggested it was either an aneurysm or a massive stroke." -snip- We will miss you Richard (((((((((((((((((((((CRASH)))))))))))))))))))

Nice to know I've got LOTS of company with this

Study Says Restless Leg Syndrome Common By EVAN BERLAND, Associated Press Writer TRENTON, N.J. - About one in 10 people suffer weekly from a syndrome that causes leg discomfort and leads to sleeplessness, and few are properly diagnosed by their physicians, according to a drug company-funded study to be released Tuesday. The study, based on surveys of 23,052 people in five countries, indicates that many doctors and patients do not recognize restless legs syndrome, even when a sufferer reports experiencing symptoms twice a week. "The patient didn't know what they had. The doctor didn't know what they had and, as a result, the people suffering from this condition didn't really get the medical care they deserve," said study co-author Dr. Wayne Hening, a clinical assistant professor of neurology at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, N.J. -snip- I was diagnosed with this after doing a survey and a at home sleep study sponsored by Stanford several

Survivied the weekend

Had a pretty busy weekend, but an enjoyable one. Friday we ran errands and did grocery shopping. Can't believe the cost of some groceries. We've stopped buying milk and have switched over to using powdered milk in recipes (won't drink the stuff, but it is great in recipes. I can add extra to make sure we are getting our calcium). I'm also really getting to like the bulk bin section of WinCo more and more. I'll probably pic up a lot of the things I need there, esp spices and such. SOOOOOO much cheaper. Sat we were going to go out to the farm and bury Freddy, but with the thunderstorms and rain it has just been too wet this weekend. So instead we re-arranged the kitchen. We moved the fridge out from where it was to the wall with the deep freeze (we plugged it into that wall with an extension cord for overnight to make sure we wouldn't blow a circuit having it and the deep freeze on the same one). Took some doing, but we now have more room in

It's FRIDAY!!!!!!! Okay not really, but it is for me

During the summers I take payday Fridays off and tomorrow will be my first 3 day weekend off for the summer. I've got so much annual leave built up this barely makes a dent in it, so I've got to figure out a time to take a big chuck off and take an actual vacation (not that we could afford to go anywhere, gas is up to $2.19 a gallon). LGC (little girl cat) is settling in nicely, tho we think KiKi had been pounding on her last night. Hubby got up about 5 am and found her behind my computer and KiKi laying in wait. So we'll make sure LGC comes to bed with us until she's big enough to fight back, tho she is holding her ground better then we thought. She is finally eating, tho I did have to fight her for my piece of pork roast hehehehehe. I was sitting on the couch and she came over and sniffed my plate. I do have her kitty dish with her kitten food in it next to me (partly to make sure KiKi doesn't snarf down the kitten's food), but she usually sniffs it and w

New day

Survivied yesterday and made it thru the night without Freddy snuggled up under my chin. The other kitties are doing their best to keep our spirits up. I think KiKi misses Fred, even if she tries not to show it. Went thru our photos, I could have sworn I had a lot more Freddy pics. We may have some more hiding somewhere, hubby has backups of backups and with all the 'puter crashes he may not have reloaded everything and there is a disc with Freddy's baby pics. We picked up a new thumbnail/gallery program and I made a page of all the Freddy pics I could find. The kitten is adjusting well, tho I wish she'd eat, but she's probably just still getting used to her new home. She was very playful this morning and I am still trying to figure out how she got under the couch. I had to open up the hide-a-bed to get her out.

R.I.P Freddy

We lost Freddy kitty last night. He started breathing funny and walking a few steps and laying down. We called the vet's emergency number and bundled him up and rished out. He died in my arms halfway there. The vet sai it could have been any number of things. Hubby thinks he may have suffered a mini stroke last week, which explains why he hadn't been behaving like himself all week. Last night his heart just gave out. We are going to call our friends who we got him from, I think he would like to be buried out at the farm where he was born. Here is a poem I read at times like this: Rainbow Bridge Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been il

We brought the newest little one home this evening. She isn't a happy camper right now and neither is KiKi hehehehehehe Here is a pic of the little one: She hasn't a name yet, she's a little young to know what it is, tho hubby keeps getting flashes of "Persephone". We'll give her time to figure it out. Mister is ignoring her so far, Freddy hasn't come in for the night, so he hasn't met her yet. There are a few more pics of her in my photo album, you can click on the link under things to do.

HUH?!?!?!?!

Now, I do love good food and am willing to pay for the occasional well prepared meal by a good chef, but this is F-ing ridiculous

and a helpful one too for those folk in Canada and the US and are wondering about gas prices in various places. GasBuddy Speaking of gas, saw on the news there is a station in Fullerton CA where the high for a gallon of gas is $4.07 a gallon. We gassed up while in Lewiston on Friday night, Safeway has a station and with our Safeway Club card we got 3 cents a gallon knockedoff our fillup, so we only paid $2.06 a gallon, over the lowest price of $2.15 here in Moscow. I've definately GOT to get my bike back into condition!

Rats

Looks like yardwork is completely out of the question today, it's been raining all day today :( Yesterday we spent at graduation, hanging out with our friend and her family for a while afterwards and going to lunch, and then ferrying our houseguest around checking out local stores. One was Camas Winery, which sells the BEST local made wines and meads (the meads are my favorite). Then it was home to margaritas :D So today was going to be yardwork day since Sat was friends and guest day, but it's been raiing since at least 3:30 this am, even if the rain were to finally stop around now, the grass is way too wet to even think of mowing. I also hoped to plant a few of my seedlings and fix the CD border as a couple of discs had gotten broken (either they got stomped on by deer, or my neighbor accidently crunched a couple while he was mowing. He's a nice neightbor, he gets out to mow his lawn and then continues up behind my mobile and our up hill neighbors mobile. I'm no

Friday at last!

It started very early tho, we had a staff retreat that started too darned early in the morning, which meant setting the alarm for an obscene hour. Managed to make it thru the retreat, with LOTS of coffee, tho even with all that coffee I had a very difficult time staying awake. Since I came in early for the retreat and am obligated to stay until 6pm, I got to extend my lunch hour to 2 hours, so I hid out over at the Women's Center, they have nice comfy couches :D Starting Monday tho I switch to 8am-5pm, so bets are on on my actually making it in on time the first week hehehehe. We've a house guest coming in tonight. She is a friend of our friend who is graduiating tomorrow, so we'll drive down to Lewiston this evening and pick her up (she is driving over with our friends family and Lewiston is the closet hotel they could book, they were lucky to get a booking, the hotels are usually booked a year in advance of graduation as UI and WSU graduate within a week of each o

More Whipped Cream

More Whipped Cream - author unknown I have a new delightful friend, I'm almost in awe of her; When we first met I was impressed, By her bizarre behavior. That day I had a date with friends, We met to have some lunch; Ellie had come along with them, All in all ... a pleasant bunch. When the menus were presented, We ordered salads, sandwiches, and soups; Except for Ellie who circumvented, And said, "Ice-cream, please. Two scoops." I was not sure my ears heard right, And the others were aghast; "Along with heated apple pie," Ellie smiled, completely unabashed. We tried to act quite nonchalant, As if people did this all the time; But when our orders were brought out, I did not enjoy mine. I could not take my eyes off Ellie, As her pie ala-mode went down; The other ladies showed dismay, They ate their lunches, and they frowned. Well, the next time I went out to eat, I called and invited Ellie. My lunch contained white tuna meat, She ordered a parfait. I smiled when

If you've never heard of it, I highly suggest checking out Archie McPhee , outfitters of popular culture since 1980. They have ALL sorts of kewl stuff. I am particular fan of their Devil Duckies, in fact I have a few. I have the Glow in the Dark Devil Ducky key chain: and the Itty Bitty Devil Duckies (of which I have several perched on my monitor here at work :

Huh?????

I have no clue as to why the formating of the text for my latests post are so wonky, I am hoping it must be some kind of glitch on the Bravenet end as I've gone back and triple checked what I wrote and even checked it out in the plain text editor. It shouldn't be looking like that on the finished post.

Hmmmmmm

I was just talking to hubby and he is chatting with a friend online who lives in Vancouver WA and works at a law office. Hubby asked what I thought about working at a law office, my reply "him or me" and he said me. I asked for how much, he said $9 an hour. I said, I wouldn't mind working in a law office, but that would be a serious pay cut of $2.10 an hour and a move to somewhere with a much more expensive level of living. Now, if the offer was $15 an hour to start with lots of raises and cost of living adjustments, I just might consider it, even tho it would mean moving from a state that may be backwards in some regards but allows you to be an individual to a state where they seem to beauraucrat you out of exsistance (ask me sometime about a friend over on the washington side who wanted to restore a small pond and what hoops he would have had to leap thru to do so, it is a long and frustrating story), but has a lot more cool stuff happening that is easier to get to. How

Front porches

Everytime I turn around, I'm always hearing that what is wrong with America is liberals, women's lib, you name it, I've heard it. Personally I don't think any of those are the reasons. The reason we are having so many problems in America today is we have lost the front porch. The front porch is something I miss from my childhood. Look around, old neighborhoods in most places have houses with front porches. With the front porch, you sat out front and saw your neighbors, watched the kids playing in the yards or on the quiet street. From the front porch you could see up and down the street and watch the world go by. You got to know everyone on your street. With the advent of the modern suburban neighborhood, we lost the front porch. Life turned from the front yard to the back yard, where you would know your neighbors on either side and maybe the neighbor right behind. The world suddenly was reduced to a backyard and the immediate surroundings. The same goe

My garden pics

Image
I've gotten a few of my pics processed. I've not got one of the finished space as I am trying out a new photo editor and I haven't figured out how to crop pics in it yet. Hopefully tonight I can get it figured out. But in the meantime here are a few: Before: The large plant in the space is a couple of rhubarb. I was given them last year and while I dont like rhubarb, I think it is a very pretty plant so I decided to give it a go. It seems to like me as my neighbor who'd also been given some had hers die on her and she is very good with plants. Here is a pic as the CDs are being used as edging: I've put a few more pics in my photo alubum, you can click thru to that thru the Things to do links :)

Weekends are entirely too short

Tho I managed to get a bit done. Worked on my garden space and finally got the new edging in. I used discarded CDs, like those obnoxious AOHell cds you get in the mail. One advantage of working at a library, is there is a ton ofCDs getting pitched (actually sent off for recycling) that I can lay my hands on. So I am now in serious pain as not only did I get the edging in, I was digging up a lot of tough grass that was growing into the space I was wanting for a garden. I've got some pics, as soon as I process them I'll post a couple so folk can see what a CD garden edge looks like :D My peppers have FINALLY sprouted, I was getting worried, but it looks like I'll have some seedlings to put out once the chance of frost is past. I have been considering building some cold frames, but I'll hold off on those for next year.

Why?

What causes a 26 year old student who by all accounts seemed fine and had been making plans for the summer go out to the woods and kill hiimself? Today in the news is a short article that a UI architecture student was found out in the woods by some mushroom hunters, dead by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. Goddess that is so sad and no one will ever really know why? I feel for his family who have to try and make sense of it all.

SIGH!!!!!!

Students on campus are always bitching that there needs to be better pedistrian safetly on campus, yet they then insist on crossing the street, outside of the crosswalk and then walking diagonally across the street with their cell phone glued to their ear and not even paying attention to their surroundings. THEN they have the termenity to flip you the bird when you point out they should pay closer attention to what they are doing. I think the solution to improving pedestrian safety is to allow us to hit the little shits with our vehicles and take them out of the gene pool alltogether. Then the others who actually have some brain cells will realize they have to take responsibility for their own safety and will obey pedestrian traffic laws (not to mention the laws of physics. I can't believe students made it to college without learning that a 1 ton vehicle takes longer to come to a stop then a 120 pound student).

Listening to the radio

out of Canada. Alberta is considering raising the legal drinking age from 18 to 19 and they have a lot of folk calling in giving their opinions. As one lady said, doesn't matter what they do with the drinking age, kids are going to drink, legal or not. Someone called in to say they should raise it to 21. Now, here in the States the legal age is 21 and I think that should be lowered, I'm not sure about a legal drinking age of 18 tho. A lot of 18 year olds are still in high school and a lot of their peers might not yet be 18, so I think that would cause a lot of problems. Idaho used to have a drinking age of 19 (that is until the federal government blackmailed us into raising it by threatening to withhold highway funds). Now 19 was a good age, you are well out of high school and either in college or well in to the workforce. Then again, at 18 you are legally an adult, even if you are still in high school, they can draft your ass into the military and hand you a rifle and orde

Blech!

Now I'm depressed, I've been working here for more then half my life and I'll be here for a lot longer. I think tonight is alcohol and chocolate night

My, how time flies!

Today we had staff recognition awards for university staff. I now have a plaque with my name on it for 20 years "meritorius service"! Wow! Actually it is more like 25 years if you count I worked for the library part time while I was a student. Looking at things, I can retire at age 55 with the honorific of Honored Staff Retiree as by then I will have more then met the Rule of 80: reach the age of 55 and add your years of service, if they add to 80 you can retire with full retirement bennies. When I hit 55 I will have officially worked for the U for 33 years. I don't think tho that I can afford to retire then, I'll probably have to keep working until I drop dead at my desk (unless of course my lottery retirement plan works, need to stop and pick up a couple tickets tonight, Powerball is up to 170 million :D ) as I'm very pessemistic that my retirement funds and social security will still be there the way the economy is going. All in all, the plaque is nice, a

Definately time to break out the bike

Gas prices are creeping up around here. The cheapest regular unleaded this weekend was $1.97 a gal and that was only at a couple of stations. Everyone else was above $2 a gal. In a couple of weeks I will be switching my work hours to 8-5 (I work 9-6 during the school year, I love being able to sleep in in the morning :D ) so I am going to see if I can start carpooling with a neighbor until I can get my bike back into running condition and I get my stamina back up for biking. There is a nice trail they've done by converting an old railway track that runs near our place and thru town, so I can bike to work without dealing with traffic. What I want to know, is why the price of gas in Pullman WA, right over the border is cheaper then here in Moscow? Washington has higher gas taxes, yet their prices are lower. Something weird is going on and the authorities don't want to look in to it or they pretend to look into it and find nothing wrong. Excuses used by local station owners fo

Heaven, I'm in heaven!

Finally used the single burner butane stove to do stirfry, it worked so wonderfully well. When I needed a low heat, it lowered right away, when I needed high heat I got it. Stirfry will be so much easier now and other cooking as well, I won't have to heat up the house in the summer trying to cook something on top of the stove:)

Things to do with CD-ROMS

You know all those CDs you get in the mail, mostly from AOHell? What can you do with them, there are so many that they'ed probably fill up all the landfills in the country within a week. So I've been figuring out how to re-purpose the darn things into something that is actually useful. The first thing I am doing is taking all the pretty colored ones and cutting them into different sizes and shapes, punching little holes in them and stringing them up with fishing line and turning them in to pretty mobiles to hang in trees and on the porch. The next thing I am going to do is an idea I got of an organic gardening list I am on. I have to put edging in around my garden spots and of course to do that you actually have to spend money on it. The stuff I have now is fine, I have just enough to do one bed, so rather then spend money on more edging that I can use to buy some decent gardening tools, I'm going to use the CDs to edge my beds. I'm sure there are lots of other th

Surreal start to my day

This is not going to bode well for a Monday morning. Coming into work today we saw a construction sign, surrounded by those orange highway cones. The sign said "Dry Cement" . I'm going to hide under my desk now before things get really weird hehehehehe

The end of a lovely weekend

Beltaine on Sat was perfect, the weather was warm, not a cloud in sight, lots of good friends, good food and good conversations. The rite went well, as we were casting the circle several deer appeared on the hill above us. Coyotes called out to each other (which caused the dog to go into "protect the farm" mode) and the one cat wound his way thru the legs of al the participants, purring loud enough to be heard in town LOL The bon fire after the rite was enjoyable and quite a few people jumped a small bit that was pulled out for that purpose. Today was putter about the house day, we got the satellite dish re-aligned so we finally have a strong signal again. Things got knocked out a bit during the wind storm. Got the cap back on the chimney (it came down last fall in a wind storm. Our one neighbor volunteered to climb the ladder and put it back up. Good thing, I hate climbing ladders, I have an annoying fear of heights). Lowered the lawn mower a notch and trimmed up the lawn.
